MAGNESIUM DEFICIENCY & SUPPLEMENTATION IN ANIMALS

I have been asked on many occasions whether magnesium supplementation is essential for pets, horses and livestock. The answer is simple – yes, of course.

The majority of studies involving magnesium deficiency are conducted on animals, and every study I have read through shows that magnesium supplementation not only corrects the deficiency, but also helps to relieve multiple symptoms associated with it, such as systemic stress, muscle spasms, disorders of the nervous system, digestive problems, arthritis, inflammatory conditions, helps lower blood pressure, and much more.

Not only does magnesium supplementation relieve the above symptoms, but has a positive effect on general health as well – it improves immunity, raises energy levels, regulates appetite, improves sleep and general well-being of animals and livestock.

I quote results of various studies here, to show how magnesium deficiency and supplementation affect animals.

In the Studies of Magnesium Deficiency in Animals – Symptomatology Resulting from Magnesium Deprivation by H.D.Kruse, Elsa R.Orent, and E.V. McCollum, conducted as early as 1932 by the Biochemical Laboratory of the School of Hygiene and Public health at John Hopkins Univeristy, Baltimore, the following studies were cited:

1. As early as 1926, J.Leroy concluded that when mice were placed on a diet extremely low in magnesium – 0.00103% part to 100,000 – when they were 26 days old, the action arrested their growth in 9 to 13 days, and led to death in 26-34 days. “On the other hand, the control ration containing the basal rate of 0.023% of added magnesium, permitted normal growth and development. Moreover, the change to this control ration after the animals had been depleted on the magnesium-low diet sharply checked their weight losses, permitted resumption of growth, and prolonged their lives in excellent condition for the 190 days that the experiment was continued”.

2. Unsatisfied with the conclusions of the above mentioned study, H.D. Kruse et al conducted their own experiment in order to see what other symptoms magnesium deficiency led to. They have concluded that when placed on a diet which was extremely low in magnesium (1.8 ppm), the rats met an early and violent death. The symptoms included hyperaemia caused by vasodilation, followed by nervous irritability and hyper-excitability, which was followed by a sudden fright at a slight sign of disturbance on day 18, followed up by a convulsive seizure. All respiratory movement seized during the attack.

As the study progressed, other symptoms included increased heart rate, extreme muscular fatigue leading to physical exhaustion and inability to run, thinning of the coat, oedema, arrhythmia, brittle curved nails, receding gums and lose teeth, extremely weak capillaries, appearance of haematomas, blood in the urine.

In the same study the severely depleted in magnesium rats were then placed on a diet with the magnesium levels restored to a normal level. Only 5 days later they showed weight gain of 20-25g, and growth of new hair. Their behaviour was restored to normal, and they were completely free of any symptoms by week 12.

The authors of the study were unsure why the depletion in magnesium could have caused visodilation, but have concluded that “these symptoms may be part and parcel of one condition, tetany”, which they went on to explore further.

Most animals on a diet which is natural to them, grown on magnesium-rich soil, do not experience these symptoms, since their magnesium levels are unaffected. However, in modern times, when the soil is so poor in essential minerals, not only humans become deficient in magnesium – it affects animals in equal measure. This means that magnesium needs to be replenished via supplementation.

Like with humans, animals can be supplemented with magnesium both orally and transdermally. Oral supplementation can be done via adding natural mineral substances like dolomite, containing calcium and magnesium in proportionate levels. Another way is to add magnesium chloride to the feed.

Transdermal method involves spraying/ massaging magnesium oil into the skin of an animal. I have been asked repeatedly by horse owners if magnesium chloride benefits horses. I can give only one answer – yes, it does. Horses especially are subjected to magnesium losses through exercise, which can lead to muscular fatigue, seuzures, arthritis, and resultant poor performance.

Magnesium chloride oil massaged into the skin of a horse will deliver magnesium to the muscles and body systems quickly and efficiently, by-passing digestion and thus preventing further magnesium losses through the eliminatory system.

With pets it can be a bit more difficult to apply magnesium oil on the skin, depending on the thickness of the coat. It can also be uncomfortably hot for an animal. So an addition of dolomite or a small dose of magnesium chloride to the food would be an alternative method of magnesium supplementation.

MAGNESIUM & ASTHMA – STUDIES & NATURAL SOLUTIONS

With the pollution levels this weekend at record high in central London, many people will be adversely affected by the smog hanging over the city as a result of 3 major factors: man-made hell (the pollution from cars and factories), the active sun facilitates dangerous chemical reactions in the atmosphere, the high levels of pollen, and high atmospheric pressure which does no allow the harmful particles to escape.

Needless to say, allergy and asthma sufferers are worst affected by these conditions.

How can magnesium supplementation help reduce the systemic stress and symptoms of asthma and allergies associated with the current crisis? I quote results of 2 separate studies which have been published in this blog earlier. They show that adequate magnesium levels in the body play a vital role in the management of asthma.

MAGNESIUM & ASTHMA – STUDIES

“Magnesium in the management of asthma: critical review of acute and chronic treatments, and Deutsches Medizinisches Zentrum’s (DMZ’s) clinical experience at the Dead Sea.

Harari M, Barzillai R, Shani J.
DMZ Rehabilitation Clinic, Ein-Bokek (The Dead Sea), Israel.

The recognition of asthma as an inflammatory disease has led over the past 20 years to a major shift in its pharmacotherapy. The previous emphasis on using relatively short-acting agents for relieving bronchospasms and for removing bronchial mucus has shifted toward long-term strategies with the use of inhaled corticosteroids, which successfully prevent and abolish airway inflammation. Because some of the biological, chemical, and immunological processes that characterize asthma also underlie arthritis and other inflammatory diseases, and because many of these conditions have been successfully treated for the past 40 years at the Dead Sea, we were not surprised to realize and record the significant improvement of asthmatic condition after a 4-week stay at the Dead Sea: lung function was improved, the number and severity of attacks was reduced, and the efficacy of beta2-agonist treatments was improved. After reviewing the acute and chronic treatments of asthma in the clinic (including emergency rooms) with magnesium compounds, and the use of such salts as supplementary agents in respiratory diseases, we suggest that the improvement in the asthmatic condition at the Dead Sea may be due to absorption of this element through the skin and via the lungs, and due to its involvement in anti-inflammatory and vasodilatatory processes“.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=PubMed&cmd=Retrieve&list_uids=9777879&dopt=Abstract

Dr John Briffa says:

“Magnesium therapy was tried in a study published recently in the Journal of Asthma [1]. In it, 55 adults with mild-moderate asthma were treated with magnesium (170 mg, twice a day) or placebo over a period of 6.5 months. Individuals had their lung function tested using peak expiratory flow (the maximum speed air can be expelled from the lungs) as well as something known as the methacholine challenge test. Metacholine causes constriction of airways. In this test, subjects breath in metacholine and the dose of this drug required to induce constriction in the airways. The higher the dose of metacholine required, the less ‘reactive’ the airways would be judged to be.

Compared to those taking placebo, those taking magnesium saw significant improvement in both their peak expiratory flow rate and metacholine challenge results

QUICK WAY TO REPLENISH MAGNESIUM LEVEL AND KEEP IT HIGH

Oral supplementation is probably the first one most of us will think of when we talk about topping up our level of magnesium in the body. However, not all of us can absorb oral magnesium efficiently, especially if the digestive system is clogged up with impurities, or is not very efficient – which is true of the majority of the world population over the age of 30. Even when it is healthy, much of magnesium we take orally passes through the body unabsorbed, and if we take too much then even less of it will be absorbed, since it is a laxative.

This makes transdermal magnesium supplementation a much more suitable and attractive option for most people. Transdermally, magnesium gets into the cells – where it is most needed – much more quickly than it does when taken by mouth.

The most popular ways to supplement magnesium transdermally is a bath, a spray, or a massage. Body spray and massage are most economical ways to do it. Just spray or massage the body with magnesium oil once a day after a bath or a shower. Leave it on for 1 hour, or even overnight if you can, and you should feel the relaxing and tension relieving effects of magnesium very soon.

Transdermally, magnesium can also be administered in baths, foot baths and compresses. For a bath I suggest using magnesium flakes as the more economical way to achieve the best concentration. Use about 500g -1kg of magnesium chloride flake in a bath, and 250g – 500g in a foot bath. Such procedures are most beneficial before bed time, since deep relaxation resulting from and increase of magnesium in the body will certainly promote sleep.

FAR-INFRARED MAGNESIUM WRAP

This is an amazingly relaxing and therapeutic treatment which I have developed recently. It is aimed at those who are desperately deficient in magnesium and need quick supplementation. The treatment uses far-infrared heat to open up pores and boost circulation not only in the skin, but in deeper body structures. With the pores open and blood flow increased, magnesium stands a better chance to be absorbed quickly and in large quantities.

The treatment is preceded by a massage to stimulate circulation and soften up the tissues. The infrared heat helps open up the cell membranes, which contributes towards magnesium absorption.

Apart from being very therapeutic, the treatment is thoroughly relaxing, thanks to the effects of magnesium and the infrared heat. It promotes detoxification on the cellular level, helps to relieve aches, pains, muscle spasms, arthritis, sleep problems, fatigue, boost immunity, promote relaxation, help relieve water retention and is a really great start to a weight loss programme. People generally lose a lot of water during the treatment which has an added physical effect of feeling lighter afterwards.

One of my customers described the way she felt during the treatment as “wrapped in a soft cocoon”, and another said that it felt “like being in a mother’s womb waiting to be born”.

MAGNESIUM – THE ‘ENERGY’ MINERAL – STUDY

Magnesium is the ultimate ‘energy’ mineral. Without magnesium energy simply cannot be produced. This is due to the fact that magnesium is required in the production energy-rich bonds and release of energy within the cell, from ATP – the “energy” molecule of each cell. If ATP is not bound by magnesium, then the cell dies.

Researchers with the USDA Agricultural Research Service recruited 10 postmenopausal women to participate in a three-phase diet and exercise study. During phase one (35 days), the women followed a controlled diet that delivered an adequate amount of magnesium. (The current Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for women is 320 mg daily. For men; 420 mg daily.)

In the second phase (93 days), each subject consumed a diet that contained less than half the RDA for magnesium. In the final phase (49 days) the subjects returned to a diet with adequate magnesium. At the end of each phase, subjects took exercise tests, as well as physiological and biochemical tests.

Results showed that when magnesium intake was low, exercise increased heart rate and required more oxygen compared to exercising when magnesium intake was adequate. Also, when magnesium levels in muscles were low, more energy was required and subjects tired more easily compared to subjects with adequate magnesium levels.

“Dietary Magnesium Depletion Affects Metabolic Responses During Submaximal Exercise in Postmenopausal Women” Journal of Nutrition, Vol. 132, No. 5, May 2002, www.nutrition.org

Transdermal magnesium therapy is the quickest and most efficient way to raise magnesium levels in the body to an optimal level. It is also most practical, since it can be administered as a magnesium oil spray, massage, bath, foot bath, compress, body wrap.

Japan: Nuclear crisis raised to Chernobyl level

www.bbc.co.uk

Japanese authorities have raised the severity rating of their nuclear crisis to the highest level, seven.

The decision reflects the total release of radiation at the damaged Fukushima Daiichi power plant, which is ongoing, rather than a sudden deterioration.

Level seven previously only applied to the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, where 10 times as much radiation was emitted.

Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan said radiation leaks at the plant were declining.

The Tokyo Electric Power Co (Tepco), the operator of the plant, would soon provide a schedule for getting it under control, he said at a news conference.

“Step by step, the reactors in the Fukushima Daiichi power plant are moving toward stability,” he said.

There have been no fatalities resulting from the leaks at Fukushima, and risks to human health are thought to be low.

Meanwhile a 6.0-magnitude earthquake on Tuesday prompted the plant’s operator to evacuate its staff.

Tepco said it was checking the status of the plant after the quake, the second to hit in as many days, but said there had been no reports of problems with external power.

The aftershocks come a month after a huge quake and tsunami hit north-east Japan, leaving 13,228 people dead and 14,529 missing. More than 150,000 people have been made homeless.

Impact of leaks

The Nuclear Safety Commission of Japan announced in a statement that the crisis level at the Fukushima Daiichi plant was being raised, adding that it was a preliminary assessment which required further technical evaluation by specialists.

The level seven signifies a “major accident” with “wider consequences” than the previous level, officials say.

“We have upgraded the severity level to seven as the impact of radiation leaks has been widespread from the air, vegetables, tap water and the ocean,” said Minoru Oogoda of Japan’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (Nisa), the government’s nuclear watchdog.

Reporting the commission’s decision, the IAEA said previous level five ratings had been provided separately for accidents at Reactors 1, 2 and 3 but had now been combined as a single event. Another affected unit, Reactor 4, has retained its level three rating, it said.

One official from Tepco said that radiation leaks had not stopped completely and could eventually exceed those at Chernobyl, Reuters news agency reported.

However, a nuclear safety agency spokesman told reporters the leaks were still small compared to those at the plant in Ukraine, then part of the Soviet Union.

“In terms of volume of radioactive materials released, our estimate shows it is about 10% of what was released by Chernobyl,” he said.

The decision to raise the threat level was made after radiation of a total up to 630,000 terabequerels had been estimated at the stricken plant.

That would classify the crisis at level seven on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale (Ines).

It was not clear when that level had been reached. The level has subsequently dropped to less than one terabequerel an hour, reports said.

In comparison the Japanese government said the release from Chernobyl was 5.2 million terabecquerels.
Evacuations extended

The severity level of Japan’s nuclear crisis had previously been set at five, the same as that of the accident at Three Mile Island in the US in 1979.

Japan has also said it is extending the evacuation zone around the crippled nuclear plant because of radiation concerns.

The zone will be widened to encompass five communities beyond the existing 20-km (12-mile) radius, following new data about accumulated radiation levels, officials said.

Japan’s nuclear commission said that according to preliminary results, the cumulative level of external radiation exceeded the yearly limit of 1 millisievert in areas extending more than 60km (36 miles) to the north-west of the plant and about 40km to the south-southwest.

On Monday, a 7.1-magnitude quake hit north-east Japan, leaving three people dead. It also triggered a brief tsunami warning, and forced workers to evacuate the Fukushima Daiichi plant.

Tuesday’s quake rocked buildings in the capital, Tokyo.

There were no immediate reports of fresh damage, though Japan’s Narita international airport temporarily closed its runways, and metro and train services were interrupted.

The cooling systems at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant were damaged in last month’s disaster and workers have been struggling to prevent several reactors from overheating.

Officials have warned it will be several months before the situation at the nuclear facility is brought fully under control.

Tepco said on Tuesday that a fire had broken out briefly at Reactor 4, before being extinguished.

ANALYSIS

Rachel Harvey BBC News, Tokyo

On the face of it this reclassification from a level five incident to a level seven is an alarming jump.

But the change has not been made because things have suddenly got worse at the Fukushima plant. Rather, a full assessment of the available data now suggests that a higher rating is justified.

Although the Japanese incident now equates to Chernobyl on the international scale, the two accidents are different in a number of important ways. In Chernobyl it was the reactor core itself that exploded, releasing a huge amount of radioactive material in a very short space of time. Fukushima experienced a less critical hydrogen explosion.

The initial radiation leak amounted to about a 10th of that which escaped from Chernobyl. The major concern in Japan is that the nuclear plant has not yet been brought under control, and some radioactive material is still seeping out.

WORLD’S WORST NUCLEAR INCIDENTS

  • Level 7: Chernobyl, Ukraine, 1986 – explosion and fire in operational reactor, fallout over thousands of square kilometres, possible 4,000 cancer cases

  • Level 7: Fukushima, 2011 – tsunami and possibly earthquake damage from seismic activity beyond plant design. Long-term effects unknown

  • Level 6: Kyshtym, Russia, 1957 – explosion in waste tank leading to hundreds of cancer cases, contamination over hundreds of square kilometres

  • Level 5: Windscale, UK, 1957 - fire in operating reactor, release of contamination in local area, possible 240 cancer cases

  • Level 5: Three Mile Island, US, 1979 – instrument fault
leading to large-scale meltdown, severe damage to reactor core

ZEOLITE, CLAYS & HEAVY METAL DETOX

I would like to add to the article that zeolite clinoptilolite powder (not liquid zeolite) was used with great results in the Chernobyl disaster – both given to people in specially made galettes, as well as in the powder form, mixed with water. Zeolite and clays are not only wonderful sorbents, but bind heavy metals through the cation exchange mechanism which is one of their main properties making these substances so important in heavy metal detoxification. They work both through the skin (in a bath, foot bath, compress, or wrap for example), and even better when taken internally, since as Dr Sircus mentions, the gastro-intestinal tract is one of the first victims of radioactive damage to the body.

MAGNESIUM, CLAY, ZEOLITE, DIATOMITE & RADIOACTIVE FALLOUT

With the events in Japan developing in the most alarming way, we really have to look for all possible ways to keep ourselves as free as we possibly can from the effects of the radioactive fallout which has already been spread around the globe, having reached the United States, Canada and Europe.

Unfortunately, as much as we would want it to happen, it is not going away, and we are going to live with the consequences of this new disaster for many decades, with parts of Japan most probably been made uninhabitable for hundreds of years to come.

Being a level-headed person by nature, I am not the one who likes to spread panic. Like everyone else, I would very much like to wake up one morning and realise that it is all just a nightmare, and all is well, and people are happy and healthy. However, my wish is not to come true this time…. With my family living just 900 miles away from Japan, I worry about their safety day and night. I have asked them to stock up on stable iodine and start taking it before it is too late.

I would suggest it to everyone – make sure that you have sources of iodine in your home, like kelp or organic dried seaweed, and start taking them on a regular basis. Make sure that you do not suffer from hyperactive thyroid which would mean that your iodine levels are too high. Dr Mark Sircus highly recommends nascent iodine, so stock up on the product.

I would also suggest that we all support our immune system with live sources of vitamins and minerals – such as chlorella and spirulina. These superfoods bind free radicals in the body and provide us with the full range of vitamins and minerals that nature can offer.

Magnesium supports all the body systems and detoxification processes. It provides the body with the energy it needs to ensure the elimination of toxins. The best way to supplement magnesium in the home environment is through the skin. Magnesium chloride is the most easily absorbed form of magnesium. So I can suggest using magnesium massage, magnesium spray, magnesium bath, foot bath, magnesium wrap, and any form of magnesium application you can think of.

Powdered zeolite and clay are invaluable substances providing detoxification both through the skin, and when taken orally. However, since the EU regulations have not yet progressed to accept clays and zeolite clinoptilolite as safe for human consumption, I cannot give direct recommendations regarding its intake. I can only say that I drink clay and zeolite myself – 1 heaped tsp, twice a day, about 1 hour before meals.

Both clays and zeolite are so irreplaceable in detoxification processes because they are highly sorbent, as well as chemically active. The chemical activity is due to freely available cations within their structures which when clays and zeolite are hydrated can exchange these cations for heavy metals. This property has been known for decades, but has not been utilised on the human scale properly yet. Well, not in Europe anyway.

Zeolites and clays have proved their wonderful anti-radioactive properties many times over. They are used by the military (including the British forces which are at risk of radioactive contamination). They are stocked near most nuclear sites and plants. If it was not for clays and zeolite, the Chernobyl disaster would have had much more devastating effects. Thousands of tonnes of clays and zeolite were used to cover up the site and the reactor. People were given zeolite-based galettes to help decontaminate them from the heavy metals. The problem is – they were given too late, when many people had already received a lethal dose of radiation.

However, they can certainly help those of us who are exposed to moderate doses of radiation. Clays trap heavy metals between their platelets, thanks to a slight negative charge which is created between the platelets when clays are hydrated. The negative charge attracts positively charged ions of heavy metals. However, the holding power of clays is weaker than that of zeolite, since the platelets are freely movable, and the particles between the clays can still escape given the right conditions.

Zeolites have a stronger ‘holding power’. This is due to their cage-like structure which is interspersed with multiple channels of a very small diameter. Inside those channels zeolite (I am talking about clinoptilolite here, since there are many other types of zeolite which are not suitable for living organisms) has freely available cations of sodium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, etc – the cations which are normally required by the body in large quantities. These ‘safe’ cations are exchanged for heavy metals in the process of cation exchange. Apart from detoxification, the process of cation exchange also provides minerals which the body requires for everyday functioning.

A lot more can be said about zeolite and how it works, and I will be writing about it in my book. In the meantime, please feel free to ask questions.

I have been asked about liquid zeolite and whether it is as effective as powdered zeolite. I cannot answer this question, since I have no first-hand evidence whether liquid zeolite works, but in my opinion, since zeolite works thanks to its cage-like structure and cation exchange mechanism, I am not quite sure how the structure cannot be broken during its liquidation. Having read all the information in this respect, I am still to be convinced on the subject. However, these are my own doubts, and if liquid zeolite helps you, then good luck with it.

SURVIVING NUCLEAR TOXICITY, by Dr Mark Sircus

I have just received a newsletter from Dr Mark Sircus on one of the most important subjects of the day – how to survive the radioactive disaster which happened recently in Japan and the consequences of which have already been felt all over the globe. I am quoting the article here in full, since I believe it is so important that cutting it would mean omitting vital pieces of information.

“What does radiation do to us? It burns the cells, kind of like burning down a house. It is well known that radiation burns our cells by creating too much free radical damage. Now of course this is like talking Greek to medical officials and professors because if they knew this they would be on the bullhorn telling the public what to do to minimize free radical damage.

This is important information because just about everyone in the northern hemisphere, within a short period of time, will have to live with a gentle radioactive mist all around them and their children. We always have been surrounded by radiation but increasingly so in recent decades because of all the nuclear tests and accidents and use of nuclear materials in warfare (God forbid they are using depleted uranium weapons in Libya) and, of course, the wireless revolution.

But now comes our worst nuclear nightmare, an out-of-control nuclear station belching out plutonium and other very nasty nuclear materials. Imagine it as a mist for that is what it is. If you can conceive of Geiger counters around the world picking this up you know it’s raining nuclear particles just about everywhere. Within the space of only two weeks radiation is being reported in a huge area.

Okay, it’s only a light nuclear rain so far but who wants to go out even in a mild nuclear rain without a nuclear umbrella? But for those poor unfortunate souls who live and work within 50 miles of Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, it’s a downpour, and perhaps ‘only’ a strong rain as far away as Tokyo. Now we understand why they tell people to stay indoors, the nuclear density (rain) in an area will only increase the longer the source continues to emit radioactive particles. Staying indoors only affords partial protection for the contamination seeps through in the air, water and food that we breathe and eventually eat and drink.

They can only say that this amount of initial radiation is safe because biological entities do have built in systems to handle very unsafe radioactive particles. Low levels of radiation speak about the quantity of nuclear materials, to their density, but not to the capacity of each nuclear particle to wreak havoc inside our cells by creating flurries of free radicals.

Free radicals are tremendously volatile molecules. When they are in the company of oxygen, they merge haphazardly with unsaturated fats to form peroxides. These peroxides cause grave, irreversible destruction to cells and the protective membrane linings that surround them. When escalating armies of free radicals overwhelm a person’s antioxidant defenses their health begins to burn down.

With the unfolding of the potential nuclear disaster in Japan, and the consequent potential for weather-carried radiation exposure in North America and the rest of the northern hemisphere, many people are asking what they can do to protect themselves from radiation damage. While most people are aware of the use of iodine supplementation to protect the thyroid from radioactive iodine fallout, most of the actual damage from radiation is due to runaway oxidative stress and consequent DNA damage.

This oxidative damage is due to a combination of a high production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from the radiation exposure while the radiation simultaneously causes a depression of the natural antioxidant systems (mostly the glutathione system and superoxide dismutase).

Surviving nuclear toxicity is similar to the process of surviving heavy metals and chemical toxicity though the medical situation is worsened dramatically when even super low doses of high energy radiation enters the body. No one wants to be caught with even one particle of plutonium lodged in their lungs for there is no treatment that can guarantee it can reverse, stop, or even diminish the damage.

If you were to eat some plutonium-contaminated food you might have a chance of increasing the odds it will come out the other end if you were to partake of a naturopathic intestinal cleaning process that uses clay or some ingenious formulas that maximize the effect.

Once in the tissues it’s another level of cellular warfare that goes on between the radioactive particle, heavy metal or nasty toxic chemical molecules and our tissues and cells. Once any of these toxic insults penetrates into the cells themselves there is an array of defenses waiting to defend and protect. Obviously our cells need defenses in depth, meaning it’s one thing to protect the cell membranes and cytoplasm from oxidative damage and another thing to protect the nucleus and the DNA that resides there.

Unfortunately the rain is going to be around for a while though it will drop into the soil, our water and find its way quickly into our food supply. The radioactive half-lives, the time it takes for any particular type of radiation to lose half of its intensity, are [1]:

* Uranium 238: 4.5 billion years
* Uranium 235: 710 million years
* Plutonium 239: 24,100 years
* Strontium 90: 30 years
* Caesium 134: two years
* Caesium 137: 30 years (Caesium can be absorbed in food and water or inhaled as dust. It is easily taken up by plants and animals.)
* Ruthenium 103: 39 days; Ruthenium 106, about a year
* Iodine 131: 8 days

This suit is not the answer to radiation exposure though of course such a suit would come in handy if you actually had to work in a heavily exposed area. For life to remain relatively pleasant here on planet earth, we and our corrupted medical officials must become familiar with the entire system in the body that protects us from oxidative damage.

There is an antioxidant system that acts at the cellular level to protect sensitive cellular targets right down to the nuclear DNA level. It is not just the very popular enzyme glutathione but an array of enzymes and detoxification systems that work together to save our cells of oxidative stress when attacked by radiation, heavy metals and toxic chemicals.

Dr. Chris Shade writes, “While glutathione (GSH) is now the darling of the antioxidant world, few people are realizing that it is the “glutathione system” that is important and that it includes many enzymes (e.g. glutathione peroxidase or GPx, glutathione reductase or GR, glutathione S-transferase or GST, etc.) and a toxin transport system (i.e. the Phase III transporters MRP1 and MRP2 that move glutathione-toxin conjugates out of the body) to really work. And then beyond that there are enzymes that link the glutathione system with vitamin C, vitamin E, lipoic acid, CoQ10, and thioredoxin, creating an interconnected network of antioxidant, detoxification, and repair activity.”

It is important to be clear that cellular antioxidants, detoxification/chemoprotection reactions and protein repair processes are all part of one integrated system and we need to support the whole system, not just one part of it to be really effective in dealing with radiation exposure.

Contemporary medicine recognizes few therapies for radiation injuries. Good supportive care, of course, is recommended—lots of fluids, infusions of blood-clotting platelets, and infection-fighting antibiotics is thought to be the key for acute radiation syndrome, an overall poisoning that can begin causing symptoms days to weeks after high exposure.

To guard against longer-term harm caused by low dosages, iodine can protect against future thyroid cancer by shielding the thyroid from only one type of fallout, radioactive iodine.

Medical physicist David Brenner, director of Columbia’s Center for Radiological Research, thinks that, “Before you can start to treat people, you need to know what radiation doses they got. If you take a guess and get it wrong, you might do more harm than good.” This is of course more allopathic hogwash. We do not have to wait and depend on medical testing when we know that we are being subjected to increasing levels of low-level radiation.

Cells in the bone marrow and GI tract are extremely vulnerable to radiation so they need to be protected. “They overreact to what should be reparable damage and commit cellular suicide,” says Dr. Andrei Gudkov of the Roswell Park Cancer Institute. So we must create detoxification pathways that will allow the body to remove radioactive particles as quickly as possible.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says internal exposure to plutonium “is an extremely serious health hazard” as it stays in the body for decades, exposing organs and tissue to radiation and increasing the risk of cancer. Increasing the risk of cancer does not quite cover the seriousness of plutonium contamination. It is simply death squared.

So we have to come to a whole new understanding of all this in order to come to grips with what we have to do in the face of rising radiation levels coming from a nuclear plant that was under-designed to withstand the predictable tidal wave that came following an earthquake. Human ignorance coupled with arrogance ruled once again to create a nuclear disaster of immeasurable proportions, since we have no assurances that they will ever bring this nuclear site under control.

Fortunately for the average person learning exactly what to do is reasonably easy and even easier to put into action. Anyone can learn how to set up a nuclear field hospital in their home and start treating themselves and their loved ones effectively while doctors and their superiors sit it out helplessly with their own families.

The officials and established institutions of the world would rather go down with the ship than to admit their ignorance and refusal to learn anything new. Sorry for them, but we cannot wait for them to finally take the necessary steps to become aware. We live in a dangerous world of innumerous chemical types of toxins and incredible exposure to heavy metals, especially mercury, and now to increasing radiation.

To get a bird’s eye view of the hurricanes of toxicity we face on the parts per billion and million level it is helpful to know that air pollution in major cities is seen as being just as dangerous to health as the radiation exposure suffered by survivors of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. A 2007 study suggests high levels of urban air pollution cut short life expectancy more than the radiation exposure of emergency workers who were sent into the 19-mile exclusion zone around Chernobyl straight after the accident.

This means we do not have to be given any special permission to start treating ourselves, especially if we live in an urban center. In the world that is quickly arriving, only the intelligent and adaptable will survive. The ignorant and the stubborn and the human ostriches with their heads in the sand will perish and there is nothing we can do about that just like there is almost nothing they will be able to do to bring this nuclear nightmare under control.

Survival Medicine for the 21st Century, which I published four years ago, is in part a textbook in toxicology of low-level chronic exposure. There is so much necessary information to incorporate to get a full medical picture of the situation that we all jointly face. I intend to pull from this compendium of mine all the pertinent information and put it out in this urgent book Radiation Toxicity Syndrome that zooms in on the rising radioactive threat to our heath. We will put Radiation Toxicity Syndrome out at a greatly reduced price to facilitate wide distribution.

Four years ago Dr. Garry Gordon was talking about the existing situation about toxic metals and many of the common chemical exposures. “There’s no place to escape. Every leaf, every blade of grass is now provably coated with particulate matter, which comes from the burning of things like coal, and is carried on the air. So, the oceans are loaded with mercury. There’s nothing you can eat that doesn’t have these things.”

Special Note: Just about everyone who is writing about protocols for radiation toxicity is forgetting about the importance of magnesium salts. Magnesium is a crucial factor in the natural self-cleansing and detoxification responses of the body. It stimulates the sodium potassium pump on the cell wall and this initiates the cleansing process in part because the sodium-potassium-ATPase pump regulates intracellular and extracellular potassium levels. Cell membranes contain a sodium/potassium ATPase, a protein that uses the energy of ATP to pump sodium ions out of the cell, and potassium ions into the cell. The pump works all of the time, like a bilge pump in a leaky boat, pumping K+ and Na+ in and out, respectively. This is of course just the tip of the iceberg and I will write a full explanation and instructions for use in the next few days. Meanwhile load up on magnesium oil, magnesium bath flakes, Dead Sea salt and Epsom Salts“.

MAGNESIUM BATHS WITH A DIFFERENCE

I would like to share with you a very powerful experience which I have have had thanks to magnesium chloride baths taken over a period of time.

Before I start describing it, I should say that I take magnesium chloride baths regularly, normally using warm but not hot water, and about 300-400g of magnesium chloride flake. It helps me to relax and unwind before bedtime, and is great for replenishing magnesium levels and reducing muscle tension.

However, this time my body had been aching for some time, especially in the shoulder area and the joints, perhaps due to the physical exhaustion and mental strain I had been under for the past couple of weeks, having to complete a project which took quite a bit of my time, as well as mental and physical energy. I was was going to book myself for a massage, but decided that I would need to relax prior to it, both mentally and physically, in order to get the best results.

I became so desperately achy that I needed to use drastic measures. So I used about 1kg of magnesium chloride flake, mixing it in a bathful of very warm, almost hot water. I started with warm water, immersed myself into the bath, adding hot water gradually. I made sure that the bathroom door was left open to get cool fresh air in.

The temperature of the water was of course tolerable and not uncomfortable, but I really made sure that it was as hot as I could possibly tolerate without experiencing discomfort. As soon as the temperature went down I added more hot water.

I stayed in the bath for about 45 minutes. My skin became pink, and I felt a sense of profound relaxation of the body and mind almost instantly. I touched the previously achy parts of the body – the pain was gone. I felt so relaxed after the bath that all I wanted was to go to sleep, which I did.

The effects of my fabulous bath lasted for 2 days. Since it took me some time to get to the stage of such tension, I thought that it would require quite a few such baths to get me back to my normal relaxed state again.

I continued with my regime for 2 weeks, taking a bath every other day. The improvements in my physical and psychological condition were profound. Besides, the pleasure such baths bring is heavenly and is difficult to describe. I can only suggest trying it in order to experience it for yourself. However, do make sure that you are not ill, feverish, suffering from high blood pressure or heart troubles, not pregnant, or are suffering from tumorus or any other medical condition which may make the use of very warm water a contra-indication.

You may then wish to use cooler water – closer to body temperature. Magnesium baths are a very pleasant way to replenish magnesium levels in the body through the skin quickly, by-passing digestion. It is an integral part of Transdermal Magnesium Therapy.

Always ask your doctor for advice before embarking on any such regime if you have any medical conditions or concerns about your health.

Note: Although magnesium chloride flake is the most economical product for magnesium baths, one can of course use magnesium oil if flakes are not available. The amount of magnesium oil would have to be quite high though – about a 1 litre per bath – for best results.

IODINE – PROTECTION FROM RADIATION & BEYOND

The catastrophic events in Japan are on most people’s minds these days, and even though this article is unrelated to magnesium, I wanted to use the popularity of this blog in order to spread information about the most effective ways to protect oneself from radioactive damage. This article is about iodine and its role in defending the body against radiation. I will be shortly writing articles about the wonderful magnesium, as well as clay, zeolite and diatomaceous earth, and their part in removing heavy metals out of the body once they got there. You can read more information about these minerals on www.naturalrussia.com

IODINE

www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/natural/35.html

What is it?

Iodine is a chemical element. The body needs iodine but cannot make it. The needed iodine must come from the diet. As a rule, there is very little iodine in food, unless it has been added during processing, which is now the case with salt. Most of the world’s iodine is found in the ocean, where it is concentrated by sea life, especially seaweed.

The thyroid gland needs iodine to make hormones. If the thyroid doesn’t have enough iodine to do its job, feedback systems in the body cause the thyroid to work harder. This can cause an enlarged thyroid gland (goiter), which becomes evident as a swollen neck.

Other consequences of not having enough iodine (iodine deficiency) are also serious. Iodine deficiency and the resulting low levels of thyroid hormone can cause women to stop ovulating, leading to infertility. Iodine deficiency can also lead to an autoimmune disease of the thyroid and may increase the risk of getting thyroid cancer. Some researchers think that iodine deficiency might also increase the risk of other cancers such as prostate, breast, endometrial, and ovarian cancer.

Iodine deficiency during pregnancy is serious for both the mother and the baby. It can lead to high blood pressure during pregnancy for the mother, and mental retardation for the baby. Iodine plays an important role in development of the central nervous system. In extreme cases, iodine deficiency can lead to cretinism, a disorder that involves severely stunted physical and mental growth.

Iodine deficiency is a common world health problem. The most recognized form of deficiency is goiter. Additionally, across the globe iodine deficiency is thought to be the most common preventable cause of mental retardation. Early in the twentieth century, iodine deficiency was common in the U.S. and Canada, but the addition of iodine to salt has improved public health. The addition of iodine to salt is required in Canada. In the U.S., iodized salt is not required, but it is widely available. Researchers estimate that iodized salt is used regularly by about half the U.S. population.

Iodine is used to prevent iodine deficiency and its consequences, including goiter. It is also used for treating a skin disease caused by a fungus (cutaneous sporotrichosis); treating fibrocystic breast disease; preventing breast cancer, eye disease, diabetes, and heart disease and stroke; and as an expectorant.

Iodine is also used to treat radiation emergency caused by exposure to radioactive iodides. Potassium iodide tablets for use in a radiation emergency are available as FDA-approved products (Thyro-Block, Iostat) and on the Internet as food supplements. Potassium iodide should only be used in a radiation emergency, not in advance of an emergency to prevent sickness.

Iodine is applied to the skin to kill germs, prevent soreness inside the mouth (mucositis) caused by chemotherapy, and treat diabetic ulcers.

Iodine is also used for water purification.

How effective is it?

Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database rates effectiveness based on scientific evidence according to the following scale: Effective, Likely Effective, Possibly Effective, Possibly Ineffective, Likely Ineffective, Ineffective, and Insufficient Evidence to Rate.

The effectiveness ratings for IODINE are as follows:

Effective for…

  • Treating a skin condition caused by a fungus (Cutaneous sporotrichosis).
  • Radiation. Iodine taken by mouth is effective for treating (but not preventing) radiation emergency associated with radioactive iodides.
  • Thyroid conditions. Taking iodine orally can improve thyroid storm, hyperthyroidism, and goiter.

Possibly effective for…

  • Painful fibrous breast tissue (fibrocystic breast disease), when taken by mouth.
  • Preventing soreness and swelling inside the mouth, caused by chemotherapy treatments for cancer, when applied directly to the affected area.
  • Foot ulcers associated with diabetes, when applied directly to the affected area.

How does it work?

Iodine reduces thyroid hormone and can kill fungus, bacteria, and other microorganisms such as amoebas. A specific kind of iodine called potassium iodide is also used to treat (but not prevent) the effects of a radioactive accident.

Are there safety concerns?

Iodine is LIKELY SAFE for most people when taken by mouth at recommended amounts. However, in sensitive people, iodine can cause side effects including swelling of the lips and face (angioedema), severe bleeding and bruising, fever, joint pain, lymph node enlargement, allergic reactions including hives, and death.

Large amounts or long-term use are POSSIBLY UNSAFE. Adults should avoid prolonged use of doses higher than 1100 mcg per day (the upper tolerable limit, UL) without proper medical supervision. In children, doses should not exceed 200 mcg per day for children 1 to 3 years old, 300 mcg per day for children 4 to 8 years old, 600 mcg per day for children 9 to 13 years old, and 900 mcg per day for adolescents. These are the upper tolerable limits (UL).

In both children and adults, there is concern that higher intake can increase the risk of side effects such as thyroid problems. Iodine in larger amounts can cause metallic taste, soreness of teeth and gums, burning in mouth and throat, increased saliva, throat inflammation, stomach upset, diarrhea, wasting, depression, skin problems, and many other side effects.

When iodine is used directly on the skin, it can cause skin irritation, stains, allergic reactions, and other side effects. Be careful not to bandage or tightly cover areas that have been treated with iodine to avoid iodine burn.

Special precautions & warnings:

Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Iodine is LIKELY SAFE when taken by mouth in recommended amounts. Do not take more than 1100 mcg of iodine per day if you are over 18 years old; do not take more than 900 mcg of iodine per day if you are 14 to 18 years old. Higher intake might cause thyroid problems. The topical product (2% solution) is LIKELY SAFE for use on the skin.

Autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD): People with AITD may be especially sensitive to the harmful side effects of iodine.

Thyroid disorders, such as too little thyroid function (hypothyroidism), an enlarged thyroid gland (goiter), or a thyroid tumor: Prolonged use or high doses of iodine might make these conditions worse.

Are there interactions with medications?

Major

Do not take this combination.

Medications for an overactive thyroid (Antithyroid drugs)
Iodine can affect the thyroid. Taking iodine along with medications for an overactive thyroid might decrease the thyroid too much. Do not take iodine supplements if you are taking medications for an overactive thyroid.

Some of these medications include methenamine mandelate (Methimazole), methimazole (Tapazole), potassium iodide (Thyro-Block), and others.

Moderate

Be cautious with this combination.

Amiodarone (Cordarone)
Amiodarone (Cordarone) contains iodine. Taking iodine supplements along with amiodarone (Cordarone) might cause too much iodine in the blood. Too much iodine in the blood can cause side effects that affect the thyroid.

Lithium
Large amounts of iodine can decrease thyroid function. Lithium can increase iodine’s effects on the thyroid. Taking iodine along with lithium might decrease the thyroid function too much. Do not take large amounts of iodine if you are taking lithium.

Medications for high blood pressure (ACE inhibitors)
Some medications for high blood pressure might decrease how quickly the body gets rid of potassium. Most iodide supplements contain potassium. Taking potassium iodide along with some medications for high blood pressure might cause too much potassium in the body. Do not take potassium iodide if you are taking medications for high blood pressure.

Some medications for high blood pressure include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril), ramipril (Altace), and others.

Medications for high blood pressure (Angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs))
Some medications for high blood pressure might decrease how quickly the body gets rid of potassium. Most iodine supplements contain potassium. Taking potassium iodide along with some medications for high blood pressure might cause too much potassium in the body. Do not take potassium iodide if you are taking medications for high blood pressure.

The ARBs include losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), irbesartan (Avapro), candesartan (Atacand), telmisartan (Micardis), and eprosartan (Teveten).

Water pills (Potassium-sparing diuretics)

Most iodine supplements contain potassium. Some “water pills” might also increase potassium in the body. Taking potassium iodide along with some “water pills” might cause too much potassium to be in the body. Do not take potassium iodide if you are taking “water pills” that increase potassium in the body.

Some “water pills” that increase potassium in the body include spironolactone (Aldactone), triamterene (Dyrenium), and amiloride (Midamor).

Are there interactions with herbs and supplements?

There are no known interactions with herbs and supplements.

Are there interactions with foods?

There are no known interactions with foods.

What dose is used?

The following doses have been studied in scientific research:

BY MOUTH:

* For radiation emergencies: potassium iodide (KI) should be taken just prior to, or as soon as possible after, exposure. Radiation is most harmful to pregnant or breastfeeding women and children, so KI is dosed according to amount of radiation exposure and age. Radiation exposure is measured in centigrays (cGy). For infants, babies, children, adolescents, and pregnant or breastfeeding women, KI is given if radiation exposure is 5 centigrays (cGy) or more. Tablets can be crushed and mixed with fruit juice, jam, milk, etc.
o For birth through 1 month, the dose is 16 mg of KI;
o For babies and children over 1 month through 3 years, 32 mg;
o For children 3 to 12 years, 65 mg;
o For adolescents 12 through 18 years, 65 mg or 120 mg if the adolescent is approaching adult size;
o For pregnant or breastfeeding women, 120 mg.
o For adults 18 to 40 years with exposure to 10 cGy or more, 130 mg of KI is given.
o For adults over 40 years with exposure to 500 cGy or more, 130 mg of KI is given.

The National Institute of Medicine has set Adequate Intake (AI) of iodine for infants: 0 to 6 months, 110 mcg/day; 7 to 12 months, 130 mcg/day.

For children and adults, Recommended Dietary Amounts (RDA) have been set: children 1 to 8 years, 90 mcg/day; 9 to 13 years, 120 mcg/day; people age 14 and older, 150 mcg/day. For pregnant women, the RDA is 209 mcg/day, and breastfeeding women, 290 mcg/day.

Tolerable Upper Intake Levels (UL), the highest level of intake that is not likely to cause unwanted side effects, for iodine intake have been set: children 1 to 3 years, 200 mcg/day; 4 to 8 years, 300 mcg/day; 9 to 13 years, 600 mcg/day; 14 to 18 years (including pregnancy and breastfeeding), 900 mcg/day. For adults older than age 19 including pregnant and breastfeeding women, the Tolerable Upper Intake Level is 1100 mcg/day.

Magnesium The Ultimate Heart Medicine – ebook

I would like to let the readers of the blog know that Dr Mark Sircus has published a book on the role of magnesium in supporting a healthy heart. Dr Sircus has been researching and writing on the subject of magnesium for health for many years. Considering that deaths from the heart disease are topping the world charts, this book is a must for anyone serious about the heath of their heart. I quote Dr Sircus’s introduction into the book:

“This book is a paradigm breaker in the field of cardiology. Magnesium – The Ultimate Heart Medicine offers a substantial breakthrough in cardiac medicine that could positively impact the lives of thousands if not millions of people and their families. Magnesium is the breakthrough. So is the approach that looks at and treats the alarming rise of mercury and the build up of calcium in heart tissues. Tie this in with the breakthroughs in emotional and spiritual medicine that have a direct bearing on heart tissues and the function of what is known as the heart or cardiac center (chakra) and we have a new comprehensive approach to heart health that should shake the world of cardiology.

The main focus of this first of three books in the field of heart medicine is changing the pharmacology of cardiology into something vastly more effective, safe and humane. This book puts out a universal call to cardiologists and other healthcare practitioners interested in heart health to put magnesium as the lead item in their medical protocols. The evidence is overwhelming; magnesium chloride is the perfect heart drug but fortunately for us it is not a drug at all but a safe nutritional concentrate in its chloride form.

This volume is actually two volumes in one. It includes most of the chapters that will be published under the name of Magnesium Medicine. It is included in this volume for the connivance of cardiologists and others interested in heart health. Magnesium Medicine will be targeted for the general audience.

This book is part of a trilogy on issues pertaining to the human heart. My original writings in this area are called HeartHealth. In this book I define the heart not as a physical pump but as the vulnerability of our being. My most recent writings that I call Soft Medicine are about how emotions matter in medicine. It is subtitled: The Physical Heart, Electric Heart, Emotional Heart and Spiritual Heart.

Cardiology is actually a medical practice of many mansions. Even when dealing with only the physical heart there are many complications to consider. We have to become experts on calcification as well as inflammation and infectious process in addition to all the emotional issues that influence the physical tissues of the heart. This volume concentrates on the physical heart and the best medical substance available to protect and treat it.

Because heart tissues absorb a large percentage of mercury entering the body this book covers the nightmare of mercury toxicity that is threatening our hearts with cardiac arrest. All divisions of allopathic medicine are in full denial about the terrible ruin mercury and other heavy metals poisoning have. So in denial health officials are even trying to remove precautions about eating mercury loaded fish for pregnant women but finally the FDA was literally forced to admit that there are dangers to such women and their unborn from mercury vapors from dental amalgam.

All our hearts are being poisoned if we have dental amalgam in our mouths or if we still are receiving your yearly flu shot. Flu shots are frequently laden with thimerosal, a chemical that is fifty percent by weight organic mercury of the worst kind. Even if we want to limit our vision of the heart its poisoning has to be every cardiologists concern. The materials on mercury in this book is an extension of a large body of writings and information about mercury toxicity and this will be published in 2009 as a joint effort between myself and Dr. George Georgiou.

We are presenting a trilogy of books in the area of heart medicine with the hope of impacting psychology as well as cardiology. Both fields are in desperate need of changing their pharmacology’s as well as some basic concepts and assumptions about the heart and what it really is. Cardiology and clinical psychology as well as psychiatry suffer greatly from deep separations made between the domain of the physical heart and its treatment and the emotional side of the heart, which is often in need of the same basic treatment with magnesium.”

is in an e-book format, and the price has just been reduced from $44.90 to $29.90. BUY THE BOOK HERE.

QUICK WAYS TO REPLENISH MAGNESIUM LEVEL & KEEP IT HIGH
