Magnesium Oil – Natural Relief for Premenstrual Tension (PMT)

A number of scientific studies have linked pre-menstrual tension – PMT (also called Pre-mentrual Syndrome) – with magnesium deficiency in the woman’s body.

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is experienced as a group of physical and emotional symptoms which some women experience 1-2 weeks before their menstrual period. Normally, these symptoms subside when the period starts and within a couple of days of menstrual flow. Statistics indicate that PMS affects over 80% of women of the reproductive age at some point in their lives, and about 40% of women experience symptoms bad enough to affect their daily life.

The symptoms may include, but are not limited to, cramps, dizziness, tender breasts, water retention & swelling of the body, abdominal bloating, food cravings, especially for chocolate, nausea, vomiting, stomach upsets, appetite changes, insomnia, general discomfort, anger, irritability, crying seemingly for no reason, aches and pains all over the body, fatigue, lowered immunity, and a number of other symptoms.

Facchinetti F, Borella P, Sances G, Fioroni L, Nappi RE, Genazzani AR report the following results of a 2-months’ study of 32 women-sufferers from PMS:

“To evaluate the effects of an oral Mg preparation on premenstrual symptoms, we studied, by a double-blind, randomized design, 32 women (24-39 years old) with PMS confirmed by the Moos Menstrual Distress Questionnaire. After 2 months of baseline recording, the subjects were randomly assigned to placebo or Mg for two cycles. In the next two cycles, both groups received Mg. Magnesium pyrrolidone carboxylic acid (360 mg Mg) or placebo was administered three times a day, from the 15th day of the menstrual cycle to the onset of menstrual flow. Blood samples for Mg measurement were drawn premenstrually, during the baseline period, and in the second and fourth months of treatment. The Menstrual Distress Questionnaire score of the cluster “pain” was significantly reduced during the second month in both groups, whereas Mg treatment significantly affected both the total Menstrual Distress Questionnaire score and the cluster “negative affect.” In the second month, the women assigned to treatment showed a significant increase in Mg in lymphocytes and polymorphonuclear cells, whereas no changes were observed in plasma and erythrocytes. These data indicate that Mg supplementation could represent an effective treatment of premenstrual symptoms related to mood changes.” http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2067759

“Three small double-blind RCTs have investigated the effect of magnesium supplementation in PMS. A trial in 38 women with relatively mild PMS found that a daily supplement of 200mg of magnesium reduced one out of six studied symptom categories. Fluid retention was significantly reduced in the second, but not the first month of use, but there were no significant effects on emotional symptoms… Supplementation with magnesium 360mg/day in 32 women significantly reduced total PMS symptoms, specifically those related to mood,23 while in another trial in 20 women with premenstrual migraine, the same dose of magnesium significantly reduced the number of days with headache.” National Association for Premenstrual Syndrome

The complexiities of the reproductive cycle mean that the body mobilises itself for possible fertilisation and pregnancy. This preparation leads to a number of hormones being produced in large quantities, and released into the body, leading to physiological and psychological changes in all the body systems. Magnesium plays a very important role not only in the production of hormones, but as an integral part of ATP – the energy molecule of every cell.

Premenstrual activity in the woman’s body requires a lot of magnesium. If it is in short supply, then certain processes are slowed down, and general physical and psychological tension, fatigue, cramps, aches, pain, lack of energy follow as just some of the numerous symptoms of what we call Premenstrual Tension.

The studies mentioned above were using oral magnesium supplementation to draw the positive conclusions about the role of magnesium in reducing the symptoms of PMS. However, oral magnesium supplementation has its limitations. Not everyone can absorb it via the digestive tract, and even those who can, absorb only a relatively small percentage of what has been ingested. Much of oral magnesium passes through the body unabsorbed. The chances increase when chelated magnesium is taken instead of cheaper forms of it. Magnesium citrate, magnesium orotate are some of the chelated forms of the good quality magnesium supplement. They will also be milder on the stomach, since unlike magnesium oxide, they do not take hydrocholric acid out of the body, so do not upset digestion.

To increase magnesium absorption into the body, I suggest using magnesium chloride transdermally – in the form of magnesium oil to spray the body with daily, or to massage it derectly into the skin. The oil can be strong and irritating for some, being a concentrated salt solution, so can be mixed with water as desired, to soften its action. You will still get sufficient magnesium from it to benefit from transdermal supplementation.

Another way is to soak in magnesium baths, preferably daily, using either magnesium chloride flake or Epsom salt. Although Epsom salt is cheaper to buy, magnesium chloride is a better option, since it has a simpler molecular structure, and gets straight to where it is needed. Dr Mark Sircus recommends magnesium sulphate for transdermal magnesium supplementation in most cases, except for some specific conditions. You would need betwen 500g-1kg of magnesium chloride per bath.

Various research results have shown that transdermal supplementation replenishes magnesium in the body much faster than oral supplementation. Of course, intravenous injections would be even faster, but for majority of people they are not necessary. I suggest using magnesium transdermally on a daily basis for 2 weeks at the start of the treatment, and once every 2-3 days afterwards, or as required.

Other natural remedies include vitamin B complex, Vitex Agnus Castus (Chaste Berry) – to regulate hormones, Evening primprose oil, and calcium. Exercise, sufficient sleep and healthy nutrition are also advised.

Caution:
Always check with your medical doctor for any supplementation – oral or transdermal, since certain conditions and medications would mean exercising caution in this respect.

Mineral Therapy for Radiation Protection

Since the subject of the nuclear fallout from the earthquake in Japan is going to be on top of the list for health-conscious people and health professionals for an indefinite period of time, I think it is important to spread the message of the importance of minerals in protecting us all from radiation, as well as general heavy metal toxicity of the environment we now live in. It is no secret that the economic progress has led to alarming rises in the number, as well as levels, of heavy metals in the air we breath in, the food we eat, the water we drink.

Under normal, healthy environment with nutritionally abundant uncontaminated soil and clean air and water, the body would receive all the nutrients it needs and perform all the cleaning and detoxification procedures efficiently, without the need for any interference from our part.

However, we do not live in an ideal environment, and unfortunately things are not getting any better. Which means that our body needs help – in the form of mineral supplementation in order to ensure detoxification from heavy metals.

Minerals play a vital role not only in detoxification of the body from heavy metals, but also help protect all tissues from further radioactive damage. Popular thinking is that radiation protection mostly involves using iodine, so iodine supplements have been taken in large numbers recently, by those who need it and those who don’t, while supplementation in such vital minerals as magnesium and selenium is being often overlooked.

Magnesium supports all the body systems and detoxification processes. It provides the body with the energy it needs to ensure the elimination of toxins.

Magnesium is an integral part of glutathione – a detoxifying agent which protects the body from oxidative damage. It binds toxins into soluble substances excreting them with urine through the kidneys. When magnesium is deficient, the body cannot produce sufficient glutathione, leading to cellular damage from free radicals, which leaves them exposed to further radioactive damage. Liver, kidneys, the heart, the longs, as well as other organs of the body all have glutathione, and with magnesium deficiency all of these vital organs are exposed to radiation.

Magnesium plays a vital role in detoxification of the body from such toxins as mercury, cadmium, lead, aluminium,
The best way to supplement magnesium in the home environment is through the skin. Magnesium chloride is the most easily absorbed form of magnesium. So I can suggest using magnesium massage, magnesium spray, magnesium bath, foot bath, magnesium wrap, and any form of magnesium application you can think of.

Selenium is a trace element which protects body cells from oxidative damage. According to scientific research, “low serum Se levels have been reported in pediatric and adult patients with cancers. On the other hand, hair Se levels, predicting the long-term body Se status, have been reported in only adult patients with cancer.” Ozgen, Ilker Tolga MD et al.
Journal of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology: August 2007 – Volume 29 – Issue 8 – pp 519-522

Another study concluded that “metal binding is a primary mechanism of selenium antioxidant activity, and both the chemical functionality of the selenium compound and the metal ion generating damaging hydroxyl radical significantly affect selenium antioxidant behavior.”
Erin E. Battin, Matthew T. Zimmerman, Ria R. Ramoutar, Carolyn E. Quarles and Julia L. Brumaghim Preventing metal-mediated oxidative DNA damage with selenium compounds

Powdered zeolite clinoptilolite and bentonite or green montmorillonite clay are invaluable in providing detoxification both through the skin, and when taken orally.

Both clays and zeolite are irreplaceable in detoxification processes because they are highly sorbent, as well as chemically active. Their chemical activity is due to freely available cations within their structures which when clays and zeolite are hydrated can exchange these cations for heavy metals. This property has been known for decades, and is being used in industrial applications agriculture – for example, in water purification, soil and feed additive. However, the cation exchange capacity of zeolite still have a potential for much wider range of applications, and its ability to remove heavy metals out of the body is still not used on a wide scale.

Zeolite clinoptilolite and clays have proved their wonderful anti-radioactive properties many times over. They are used by the military (including the British forces which are at risk of radioactive contamination). They are stocked near most nuclear sites and plants. If it was not for clays and zeolite, the Chernobyl disaster would have had much more devastating effects. Thousands of tonnes of clays and zeolite were used to cover up the site and the reactor. People were given zeolite-based galettes to help decontaminate them from the heavy metals. The problem is – they were given too late, when many people had already received a lethal dose of radiation.

However, they can certainly help those of us who are exposed to moderate doses of radiation. Clays trap heavy metals between their platelets, thanks to a slight negative charge which is created between the platelets when clays are hydrated. The negative charge attracts positively charged ions of heavy metals. However, the holding power of clays is weaker than that of zeolite, since the platelets are freely movable, and the particles between the clays can still escape given the right conditions.

Zeolites have a stronger ‘holding power’. This is due to their cage-like structure which is interspersed with multiple channels of a very small diameter. Inside those channels zeolite has freely available cations of sodium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, etc – the cations which are normally required by the body in large quantities. These ‘safe’ cations are exchanged for heavy metals in the process of cation exchange. Apart from detoxification, the process of cation exchange also provides minerals which the body requires for everyday functioning.

I have been asked about liquid zeolite and whether it is as effective as powdered zeolite. I cannot answer this question, since I have no first-hand evidence whether liquid zeolite works, but in my opinion, since zeolite works thanks to its cage-like structure and cation exchange mechanism, I am not quite sure how the structure cannot be broken during its liquidation. Having read all the information in this respect, I am still to be convinced on the subject. However, these are my own doubts, and if liquid zeolite helps you, then good luck with it.

LIVER DETOX & MAGNESIUM

Liver – its role in detoxification

The liver is the main detoxification organ in the body, alongside the skin and kidneys, neutralising toxins produced internally as a result of metabolic processes, as well as external toxins – harmful organisms, products of pollution, heavy metals, toxins we get from food, drink, cigarettes, alcohol, fertilisers, etc.

The liver performs hundreds of tasks every minute, constantly synthesising, removing harmful substances, filtering, processing. The liver is involved in all systems of the body, including blood circulation, endocrine, digestive, nervous, immune, reproductive, eliminatory systems. It produces multiple enzymes and hormones which are required for various body processes.

The liver detoxifies the body in a complex series of chemical reactions. Many of the toxins circulating in the body as a result of metabolic activity are fat-soluble. One of the functions of the liver is to convert these fat-soluble substances into water-soluble ones, so that they can be excreted from the body with bile or urine.

If the liver is not functioning properly, then it is unable to remove fat-soluble toxins efficiently, so they get deposited in the fatty tissues in the body and can stay there for years. So the excess fat we carry may contain a lot of fat-soluble toxic waste which keeps accumulating, leading to poor immunity, chronic fatigue, slow metabolism, weight gain, depression, formation of tumours.

The liver is involved in the regulation of hormones in the body, constantly synthesising and breaking them down. If the liver is inefficient due to being overloaded with toxins, then this synthesis and elimination of unwanted hormones is compromised. This means that the hormones which the body no longer needs are not broken down and are accumulating in the body, mainly in the fatty tissues. A good example is excess oestrogen in women which gets deposited in fatty tissues causing all sorts of problems, such as heavy bleeding, weight gain, fibroids, development of tumours, etc.

Apart from what has been mentioned already, the liver is the powerhouse in the body, producing the energy in a long chain of enzymatic reactions, as a result of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism. Again, if its function is deficient, then the amount of energy it produces is insufficient for the body processes, resulting in slowing down of the whole body.

On the whole, the liver determines how healthy a person feels. This is why naturopaths first of all examine the liver to check its efficiency and overall health.

What role does magnesium play in all this?

Magnesium is one of the most important and abundant minerals in the body. It is the main component in over 300 reactions. The liver uses a lot of magnesium, since it is the nutrient processing, detoxifying and energy producing “factory” in the body. Without magnesium these processes would not take place.

Magnesium can become depleted as a result of an illness, alcohol abuse, insufficient magnesium in the diet, stress, physical exertion.
Here is a result of a study of how liver magnesium is affected by alcohol abuse for example:

“The acute ingestion of alcohol causes a prompt, short-term increase in urinary excretion of magnesium. There are wide individual variations in the extent of this effect both in normal subjects and in chronic alcoholics. Patients who are already magnesium-depleted tend to lose less magnesium in response to alcohol intake. http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0887/is_n10_v13/ai_15882994

Magnesium plays a very important role in detoxification, in a number of ways:

1. It provides energy needed for detox by activating the energy-producing ATP-molecule. Without magnesium energy cannot be produced, so detoxification is not possible.

2. It stimulates the sodium-potassium exchange on the cell wall which regulates potassium level inside and outside the cell thus stimulating the cell cleansing.

3. Magnesium regulates calcium content inside the cell preventing cellular calcification and premature ageing.

4. Magnesium protects the cell against oxidation and damage by free radicals.

5. Magnesium protects the body from heavy metals such as cadmium, lead, nickel, aluminium, mercury.

6. Magnesium is crucial at protecting the brain against damage by heavy metals.

To keep the body free from toxins, it is absolutely vital to maintain optimal magnesium levels. There are several way in which it can be achieved:

1. Magnesium-rich diet
2. Oral supplementation with magnesium
3. Transdermal magnesium therapy.

All of these methods can and should be used in cases where magnesium levels have become low.

Transdermal magnesium therapy is one of the best ways to replenish magnesium levels quickly and efficiently. This can be achieved by spraying or rubbing magnesium oil on the body regularly after a bath, or using magnesium baths/ foot baths, compresses.

LIVER DETOX PROCEDURE

The following method provides a quick and effective liver cleanse.
One teaspoon of magnesium chloride, mixed with about 500ml of warm water, to be taken early in the morning. Have a hot water bottle ready. Then lie down, with the hot water bottle tucked under the right side (it should not be too hot – 45 degrees C would be just the right temperature). This will stimulate the bowel activity and bile excretion, kick-starting the process of detoxification.

It is important to drink plenty of water on the day. Green montmorillonite clay can be added to the water. Clay is another very powerful substance able to bind toxins and take them out of the body both mechanically and via a process called “cation exchange”. Chocolate Craving a Symptom of a Magnesium Deficiency

Estrogen Dominance hormone imbalance causes a magnesium deficiency. Chocolate is one of the foods that is highest in magnesium. So women that have a hormone unbalanced system that are estrogen dominant typically have a chocolate craving just before their period. However, if they are taking magnesium supplements, they will not have a chocolate craving. The woman has a chocolate craving because her body needs magnesium.

It is very important when taking magnesium supplements to take a magnesium that is easily absorbed. Magnesium oxide is poorly absorbed with an absorption rate of 4%. It is best to get a chelated magnesium at the health food store that has a absorption rate of 40%. A chelated magnesium is simply a magnesium that has an amino acid wrapped around it. I like to use magnesium glycinate about 400-600 mg/day.

* insomnia
* muscle tension or spasms
* muscle cramps
* constipation
* headaches
* menstrual cramps
* heart palpitations
* cold hands and cold feet – Reynaud’s Syndrome
* calcification of tissues or joints
* possible microcalcifications in the breast
* possible calcifications in the arteries or heart valves
* nervousness or irritability

Muscle Tensing from Lack of Magnesium

Whenever there is a magnesium deficiency, there is muscle tensing or spasm. This is commonly known as a “charlie horse”. With a magnesium deficiency, any muscle in the body will tense up. If the leg muscle tenses up, then this is called a “charlie horse”. The uterus is kind of like a muscular bag. If the uterus tenses up, women label this as menstrual cramps. The uterus simply contracts and tenses up. Your intestines are surrounded by smooth muscle, the intestines tense up and you get constipation.

Cold hands and feet can also be a symptom of magnesium deficiency. Arteries are simply tubes in your body that supply blood to the tissue in the body. Veins bring back blood to the heart to recycle the blood. Arteries have a muscular sheath that surrounds the tube. Yes, this muscular covering of the artery will contract with a magnesium deficiency. The result is that the artery will get smaller with a magnesium deficiency. And not as much blood will be delivered to the tissue. Frequently, Estrogen Dominant women will have cold hands and feet because the magnesium deficiency causes the arteries of the hands and feet to contract and get smaller, and so not enough blood is delivered to the hands and feet. The hands and feet are starved for blood and are cold. These women may be misdiagnosed as Raynaud’s Syndrome.

Sometimes this contraction of the ateries in the hands and feet can be so severe that putting your hand in cold water will further constrict the arteries and you will get pain. This is labeled as Reynaud’s Syndrome. I have a patient that claims she was diagnosed with Reynaud’s Syndrome. She cured herself by taking magnesium, taking progesterone, and cutting out xenoestrogens and phytoestrogens.

The arteries that feed your head also have a muscular covering. A magnesium deficiency will also cause these arteries to constrict as well and it may be possible to cause a migraine headache. So if you have a menstrual migraine headache, cut out xenoestrogens, take progesterone, and take magnesium supplements.

Calcium Deposited in Unwanted Places

Magnesium is important to neuromuscular transmission. It is also an important cofactor in the enzyme processes that form the matrix of bone and in the synthesis of nucleic acid. Magnesium has an inverse relationship with calcium. Thus, if food is deficient in magnesium, more of the calcium in the food is absorbed. If the blood level of magnesium is low, calcium is mobilized from bone.

A magnesium deficiency will cause calcium to be deposited in unwanted spots such as bone spurs and microcalcifications in the breast. When your doctor does a mammogram, the radiologists frequently see microcalcifications in the breast. This frequently warrants a biopsy. The area of the breast that has microcalcifications may or may not be breast cancer. A biopsy is the only way to be sure. So the physician is forced to do a biopsy to make sure the area that has microcalcifications is not a breast tumor and must do a biopsy for medical legal reasons.

The mainstream medical approach is that there may or may not be an association of breast cancer with the microcalcifications. So a biopsy is required.

In my opinion, Estrogen Dominance hormone imbalance causes breast cancer. Estrogen Dominance also causes a magnesium deficiency. A magnesium deficiency causes calcium to deposit in the body in the form of bone spurs, microcalcifications in the breast and possibly calcium deposits in the arteries. In my opinion, breast cancer does not cause microcalcifications in the breast. Estrogen Dominance causes both breast cancer and microcalcifications in the breast.

Nerve Misfiring Causing Palpitations

For nerves to properly conduct, there must be adequate levels of magnesium. If there is a magnesium deficiency, then the nerve will misfire and not conduct the electrical impulse correctly. The heart muscle has a nervous system that allows it to beat regularly (when the nerves are working properly). f there is a magnesium deficiency, then you may get heart palpitations or irregular heart beats. Try the easiest remedy first, eliminate xenoestrogens, take progesterone, and take magnesium glycinate. See if this takes care of the problem.
