While the large majority of people can adjust to the seasonal changes thanks to the body&#8217;s adaptive mechanisms, and just go with it naturally, there is no secret that some dread the onset of yet another period of longer nights and shorter days, little sunshine and cold temperatures. For most it is the lack of sunshine that leads to the slump in energy levels and low spirits. </p>
<p>I found a good article about various natural ways of dealing with winter blues. These strategies are not new, but perhaps forgotten by some. I am particularly interested in the role of vitamin D3 in dealing with depression. And of course we should not forget that <strong>MAGNESIUM plays a crucial role in the release and uptake of serotonin by brain cells</strong>.<br />

<strong>10 Natural Antidepressants to Boost Your Spirits</strong></p>

<p>&#8220;What do you do when you&#8217;re <strong>feeling blue</strong>? We all want to be happier, yet as a society depression is on the rise. As life coaches we believe each person has unique solutions to their problems. While <strong>antidepressants</strong> are the answer for some with clinical depression, others may seek natural methods in addition to or as an alternative to taking medication. While there is no cure-all for depression, there is <strong>research supporting several natural options</strong> that may help boost our minds as well as our spirits.</p>
<p>1. <strong>Get your hands in the dirt</strong>. Gardening has long been known for its meditative, relaxing, and grounding effects. Medical News Today reports that UK scientists have discovered <strong>friendly bacteria in soil that reportedly affects the brain in a way similar to antidepressants by increasing the release of serotonin</strong>. A great, easy to follow gardening guide is RHS Gardening Month by Month, by Ian Spence.</p>
<p>2. <strong>Meditate</strong>. Many of us have all heard that <strong>meditation reduces stress</strong>. Scientists are now beginning to uncover evidence that meditation has a tangible effect on the brain. Professor Mark Williams, from the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Oxford conducted a trial study reported by the BBC News, indicates that meditation reduces the likelihood of depression by over 50%. &#8220;It suggests to people that they begin to see all their thoughts as just thoughts, whether they are positive, negative or neutral.&#8221; Get Self Centered offers meditation workshops and retreats across the US. <p>3.<strong> Burn Incense</strong>. Incense has long been used in religious rituals and hippy living rooms across the globe to create a peaceful environment. In a new study (that can be found at The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) Journal an international team of scientists have discovered how burning frankincense (resin from the Boswellia plant) activates poorly understood ion channels in the brain that alleviate depression. <p>4. <strong>Ingest a yellow flower</strong>. <strong>St. John&#8217;s Wort</strong> is a wild yellow flower that has been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years. There is some scientific evidence that St. John&#8217;s Wort is helpful in treating mild to moderate depression. Two large studies, one sponsored by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), showed that the herb may be helpful for treating mild depression, however it may not be effective for treating major depression&#8230; </p>
<p>5. <strong>Eat Sushi</strong>. Research has shown that <strong>fatty fish oil</strong> can actually <strong>improve wellbeing</strong>. People suffering from depression have lower levels of <strong>omega-3 fatty acids</strong> in the blood. One study (Nemets &#038; Belmaker &#8211; American Journal of Psychiatry) showed that the lower the level of EPA, the more severe the clinical depression. In addition, fish oil supplementation reduced suicidal tendencies and improved the well being when 40 people were given fish oil or placebo for 12 weeks (Hallahan, Hibbeln, Davis &#8211; British Journal of Psychiatry). Fish oil can be found in raw and cooked fish and can also be taken as a dietary supplement. Zebra Organics is a great source for high quality, organic fish oil supplements.</p>
<p>6. <strong>Move your body</strong>. Talk a walk, ride a bike, hit the gym, or go dancing. Science indicates that <strong>people who regularly exercise benefit from positive boosts in mood and reduce the risk of depression</strong>. When you <strong>exercise</strong>, the body naturally releases chemicals called <strong>endorphins</strong> that trigger positive feelings in the body and mind.</p>
<p>7. <strong>Use natural sweeteners</strong> such as <strong>Agave Necta</strong>r or <strong>Maple Syrup</strong>. Some studies have linked the use of refined sugar to depression. Author William Dufty creates a strong argument for avoiding sugar in his book Sugar Blues. Another interesting book on the subject is Sugar Shock, by Connie Bennett with Stephen Sinatra, M.D. Natural sweeteners such as Agave (a sweet cactus nectar) and maple syrup (a sweetener made from the sap of maple trees) can be used as natural alternatives to refined sugar.</p>
<p>8. <strong>Get in the sunshine</strong>. <strong>Vitamin D</strong> has been shown to <strong>increase levels of serotonin in the brain</strong>. Researchers from the University of Toronto noticed that people who were suffering from depression, particularly those with seasonal affective disorder, tended to improve as their levels of vitamin D in the body increased over the normal course of a year. The recommendation is to allow yourself limited, unprotected sun exposure in the early morning and late afternoon (no more than 15 minutes for light-skinned individuals, 40 minutes for darker skin)&#8230;</p>
<p>9. <strong>Have a good laugh</strong>. Have you ever noticed the physical response you sometimes have after a good laugh? Studies show that <strong>laughter fights the onset of depression by reducing stress hormones</strong>. The positive results of laughter may encourage people to relax and release the stress that often causes depression. Reading the comics, watching your favorite sitcom, or listening to a comedian may actually be a prescription for happiness.</p>
<p>10. <strong>Use depression to make you stronger</strong>. Can depression actually make you healthier? A recent article from the BBC News features Dr Paul Keedwell, an expert on mood disorders at the Institute of Psychiatry, King&#8217;s College London. Keedwell says that <strong>depression</strong> is not a human defect at all, but a <strong>defense mechanism</strong> that in its mild and moderate forms can force a healthy reassessment of personal circumstances. &#8220;Don&#8217;t beat yourself up about being depressed, in most cases it will run its course provided you take yourself out of the situation that caused it.&#8221; Depression can actually serve a purpose, deepening and enriching the human experience. <strong>By overcoming challenging times in our lives, we can actually become stronger</strong> evolutionarily speaking.</p>
<p>Simply <strong>recognizing we are feeling depressed</strong> can be the <strong>first step towards changing it</strong>. We all experience difficult stages in our lives and while we recommend seeing a professional to help alleviate clinical depression, we also have found that little changes in our diet and lifestyle can go a long way. So the next time the blues get you down, you can try lighting up some frankincense, ordering a fish taco, and chowing it down in the sunshine. Hey, worth a try. &#8221;</p>

<em>I have been asked many times about the <strong>differences between magnesium chloride and magnesium sulphate</strong>, commonly known as <strong>Epsom Salts</strong>. There is a great article about it written by Dr Mark Sircus, a well-know and recognised researcher of magnesium and its benefits. I quote it here:</em><br />

<p>&#8220;According to Daniel Reid, author of The Tao of Detox, magnesium sulfate, commonly known as Epsom salts, is rapidly excreted through the kidneys and therefore difficult to assimilate. This would explain in part why the effects from Epsom salt baths do not last long and why you need more magnesium sulfate in a bath than magnesium chloride to get similar results. Magnesium chloride is easily assimilated and metabolized in the human body.[1] However, Epsom salts are used specifically by parents of children with autism because of the sulfate, which they are usually deficient in , sulfate is also crucial to the body and is wasted in the urine of autistic children.</p>
<p>For purposes of cellular detoxification and tissue purification, the most effective form of magnesium is magnesium chloride, which has a strong excretory effect on toxins and stagnant energies stuck in the tissues of the body, drawing them out through the pores of the skin. This is a powerful hydrotherapy that draws toxins from the tissues, replenishes the “vital fluid” of the cells and restores cellular magnesium to optimum levels. Magnesium Chloride is environmentally safe, and is used around vegetation and in agriculture. It is not irritating to the skin at lower concentrations, and is less toxic than common table salt.</p>
<p>Magnesium Chloride solution was not only harmless for tissues,<br />
but it had also a great effect over leucocytic activity and<br />
phagocytosis; so it was perfect for external wounds treatment.</p>
<p>Dr. Jean Durlach et al, at the Université P. et M. Curie, Paris, wrote a paper about the relative toxicities between magnesium sulfate and magnesium chloride. They write, “The reason of the toxicity of magnesium pharmacological doses of magnesium using the sulfate anion rather than the chloride anion may perhaps arise from the respective chemical structures of both the two magnesium salts. Chemically, both MgSO4 and MgCl2 are hexa-aqueous complexes. However MgCl2 crystals consist of dianions with magnesium coordinated to the six water molecules as a complex, [Mg(H2O)6]2+ and two independent chloride anions, Cl-. In MgSO4, a seventh water molecule is associated with the sulphate anion, [Mg(H2O)6]2 +[SO4. H2O]. Consequently, the more hydrated MgSO4 molecule may have chemical interactions with paracellular components, rather than with cellular components, presumably potentiating toxic manifestations while reducing therapeutic effect.”</p>
<p>MgSO4 is not always the appropriate salt in clinical therapeutics.<br />
MgCl2 seems the better anion-cation association to be<br />
used in many clinical and pharmacological indications.[2]<br />

<p>Magnesium sulfate is a chemical compound containing magnesium and sulfate, with the formula MgSO4. In its hydrated form the pH is 6.0 (5.5 to 7.0). It is often encountered as the heptahydrate, MgSO4·7H2O, commonly called Epsom salts. Anhydrous magnesium sulfate is used as a drying agent. Since the anhydrous form is hygroscopic (readily absorbs water from the air) and therefore harder to weigh accurately, the hydrate is often preferred when preparing solutions, for example in medical preparations. Epsom salts have traditionally been used as a component of bath salts.</p>

<strong>WAYS TO REPLENISH MAGNESIUM QUICKLY &#038; KEEP IT HIGH:</strong><br />

<strong>Oral supplementation</strong> is probably the first one most of us will think of. However, <strong>not all of us can absorb oral magnesium efficiently</strong>, especially if the digestive system is clogged up with impurities, or is not very efficient &#8211; which is true of the majority of the world population over the age of 30. Even when it is healthy, <strong>much of magnesium we take orally passes through the body unabsorbed</strong>, and if we take too much then even less of it will be absorbed, since it is a <strong>laxative</strong>.<br />

This makes transdermal magnesium supplementation a much more suitable option for most people. <strong>Transderamlly, magnesium gets into the cells &#8211; where it is most needed &#8211; very quickly.</strong><br />

The most popular ways to supplement magnesium transdermally is a <strong>bath, a spray, or a massage</strong>. Body spray and massage are most economical ways to do it. Just spray or massage the body  with magnesium oil once a day after a bath or a shower. Leave it on for  1 hour, or even overnight if you can, and you should feel the relaxing and tension relieving effects of magnesium very soon.<br />

Transdermally, magnesium can also be administered in <strong>baths</strong>, <strong>foot baths</strong> and <strong>compresses</strong>. For a <strong>bath</strong> I suggest using <strong>magnesium flakes</strong> as the more <strong>economical</strong> way to achieve the best concentration. Use about <strong>500g of magnesium chloride flake</strong> in a bath, and <strong>250g</strong> in a <strong>foot bath</strong>. Such procedures are most beneficial <strong>before bed time</strong>, since deep relaxation resulting from and increase of magnesium in the body will certainly <strong>promote sleep</strong>.<br />

Much of it is due to our<strong> biological cycles </strong>and <strong>adaptation mechanisms</strong>. The body has to ensure our survival in the cold winter  weather &#8211; so it acts to <strong>protect</strong> us by <strong>slowing down metabolism, piling up energy reserves </strong>(most of us put on weight in winter) and making sure they are not expended unnecessarily. A lot of complex changes happen in all the body systems to prepare us for winter. </p>
<p>This undoubtedly has a profound <strong>psychological effect </strong>on us. While a large majority people cope reasonably well with it, there is a fair percentage of those who suffer from what is called &#8216;winter blues&#8217; or in medical terms &#8211; <strong>&#8216;Seasonal Affective Disorder&#8217; (SAD)</strong>. </p>
<p><strong>Symptoms of SAD</strong> may include of <strong>difficulty waking up in the morning, tendency to oversleep as well as to overeat, craving for carbohydrates, which leads to weight gain. Other symptoms may include a lack of energy, getting easily exhausted, headaches, difficulty concentrating, withdrawal from social activities, friends, family</strong>. As we have learned from previous posts on this blog, magnesium plays a very important part in the way we feel physically and psychologically. Magnesium deficiency is directly connected to muscle cramps, aches, pains, arthritis, osteoporosis, nervous exhaustion, stress-related disorders, fatigue, poor immunity, insomnia, headaches, migraines, depression, anxiety, toxicity and many more. Pregnant women and young mothers, sportsmen, children, elderly people, professional people, all benefit tremendously from magnesium supplementation. However, oral supplementation is not always the most efficient way to top up our magnesium levels, since only a relatively small percentage of magnesium gets absorbed from the gut into the blood stream. If we take too much oral magnesium we get diarrhoea, and then we absorb even less of it.</p>
<p>
So what is the solution to it? Transdermal magnesium supplementation (via the skin) is the best and most efficient way to get required amount of magnesium into the body fairly fast. Of course, it does not beat intravenous injections &#8211; they are the fastest acting. But for most people transdermal magnesium applications are by far the most convenient way to get magnesium into the body. </p>
<p>
One of the best and most pleasant ways to do it is via a massage. Magnesium oil is not actually an oil but a highly concentrated magnesium chloride solution. When the flake is mixed with water in 1:1 ratio the concentration is really high. You do not need such a high concentration of course &#8211; more water can be added (e.g. 1 part of flake to 2  parts of water). A more concentrated solution will result in more magnesium chloride being absorbed into the body though. Use the solution as you would use any oil. The results are simply phenomenal. Any aches, pains, stresses simply disappear during the treatment. Physical and psychological relaxation is profound and obvious. If your client suffers from exhaustion, insomnia, headaches, migraines, stress, aches, pains, knotted muscles, painful joints, chronic fatigue &#8211; all of these will be helped. </p>
<p>
The only thing with magnesium oil is that it has a slight stinging sensation to it being a salt. I personally do not mind and find it pleasant. Sometimes it can cause an irritation in softer areas like the neck. However, benefits by far outweigh any temporary discomfort. I have earlier described my own experience with magnesium oil when I had excruciating pain and burning sensation in my neck and shoulders. Although it later brought in a rash and spots, the relief I experienced from magnesium oil was so quick and profound that I will not think twice if and when I have pain in any area of my body again. Two recently published studies suggest that a possible organic explanation for Chronic Fatigue exists.</p>
<p>
British scientists report that low levels of magnesium may play a part in this illness of unknown cause. Although it is unclear whether magnesium injections reported improvements in their condition. The findings were published in the March 30 issue of &#8220;The Lancet&#8221; a renowned British medical journal.</p>
<p>
The studies were conducted by Dr. Michael J. Campbell, a medical statistician at Southampton General Hospital. Ivan M. Cox, a medical student at the University of Southampton and Dr. David Dowson, a Southampton physician.</p>
<p>
&#8220;This study shows a dramatic improvement in a small group of people with this illness, but it is too soon to say that this is an appropriate treatment that will be of help to the vast majority of patients,&#8221; said Dr. Jay A. Levy, a professor of Medicine at the University of California at San Francisco, who has been searching for a possible viral cause of the disease.</p>
<p>
Chronic fatigue patients usually complain about malaise lasting several months or years and nonspecific flu-like symptoms, including headaches, fever and muscle pain. They also suffer from an inability to think clearly, irritability and depression.</p>
<p>
The researchers said they had decided to explore magnesium levels in patients with chronic fatigue because malabsorption of magnesium had been associated with lethargy and weakness. They did a case study and found that 20 patients suffering from chronic fatigue had slightly lower red-cell magnesium concentrations than did 20 healthy subjects matched for age, sex and social class.</p>
<p>
In a clinical trial involving 32 patients with chronic fatigue syndrome, 15 patients were randomly given intramuscular injections of magnesium sulfate every week for six weeks and 17 were given shots of water.</p>
<p>
The patients were not aware which treatment they were receiving. Before and after the treatment, patients completed a questionnaire asking about their energy levels, pain, perception, sleep patterns, sense of social isolation, emotional reactions and physical mobility.</p>
<p>
Twelve of the 15 patients treated with the magnesium said they had benefited and reported higher energy levels, better emotional states and less pain: just three patients who received the dummy shots claimed any improvement.</p>
<p>
Yet to be determined is why magnesium levels were so low in these patients and if this is the case in the majority of chronic fatigue patients. Doctors have only recently started to take chronic fatigue syndrome seriously after years of dismissing it as little more than a figment of a patient&#8217;s imagination. </p>

Bishofit is a name for magnesium chloride salt which was formed millions of years ago as a result of evaporation of ancient seas. It lies deep underground &#8211; and is obtained by dissolving the crystals in water and pumping up the saturated solution. In this respect Bishofit has the same origin as Zechstein magnesium. It owes its name to a German chemist Gustav Bischof who first discovered underground deposits of magnesium chloride in 19th century. </p>
<p>The main constituent of Bishofit in its liquid form is Magnesium Chloride hexahydrate, some calcium sulphate, calcium chloride, calcium hydrocarbonate, sodium chloride,  and of course water, with the overall mineral content of 400-450g per 1 litre of water. Additionally, Bishofit contains sodium, iodine, iron, bromide, silica, molybdenum, titanium, lithium, as well as traces of almost all the chemical elements of the Periodic Table.</p>
<p><strong>Healing Properties of Bishofit</strong></p>

<p><big><small> He tested several mineral solutions and discovered that a Magnesium Chloride solution was not only harmless for tissues, but it had also a great effect over leucocytic activity and phagocytosis; so it was perfect for external wounds treatment. </small></big></p>

<p><big><small> Dr. Delbet performed a lot of <em>in vitro</em> and <em>in vivo</em> experiments with this solution and he became aware that it was good not only for external applications, but it was also a powerful immuno-stimulant if taken by injections or even by mouth. He called this effect &#8220;cytophilaxis&#8221;. In some <em>in vivo</em> experiments it was able to increase phagocytosis rate up to 300%. <p><big><small> He obtained very good results in: colitis, angiocholitis and cholecystitis in the digestive apparatus; Parkinson&#8217;s Disease, senile tremors and muscular cramps in the nervous system; acne, eczema, psoriasis, warts, itch of various origins and chilblains in the skin. There was a strengthening of hair and nails, a good effect on diseases typical of the aged (impotency, prostatic hypertrophy, cerebral and circulatory troubles) and on diseases of allergic origin (hay-fever, asthma, urticaria and anaphylactic reactions). </small></big></p>

<p><big><small> Then Prof. Delbet began to investigate the relationship between Magnesium and Cancer. After a lot of clinical and experimental studies, he found that Magnesium Chloride had a very good effect on prevention of cancer and that it was able to cure several precancerous conditions: leucoplasia, hyperkeratosis, chronic mastitis, etc. </small></big></p>

<p><big><small> Epidemiological studies confirmed Delbet&#8217;s views and demonstrated that the regions with soil more rich in magnesium had less cancer incidence, and vice versa. </small></big></p>

<p><big><small> Prof. Delbet wrote two books, <em>Politique Preventive du Cancer</em> (1944) and <em>L&#8217;Agriculture et la Santé</em> (1945), in which he stated his ideas about cancer prevention and a better living. The first is a well documented report of all his studies on Magnesium Chloride. </small></big></p>

<p><big><small> In 1943 another French doctor, A. Neveu, M.D., used the Magnesium Chloride solution in a case of diphteria to reduce the risks of anaphylactic reaction due to the anti-diphteric serum that he was ready to administer. </small></big></p>

<p><big><small> To his great surprise, when the next day the laboratory results confirmed the diagnosis of diphteria, the little girl was completely cured, before he could use the serum. </small></big></p>
<p><big><small> </small></big></p>
<p><big><small> He credited the immuno-stimulant activity to the solution for this result, and he tested it in some other diphteric patients. All the patients were cured in a very short time (24-48 hours), with no after-effects. As Magnesium Chloride has no direct effect on bacteria (i.e.it is not an antibiotic ), Neveu thought that its action was a specific, immuno-enhancing, so it could be useful, in the same manner, also against viral diseases. </small></big></p>

<p><big><small> So he began to treat some cases of poliomyelitis, and had the same wonderful results. He was very excited and tried to divulge the therapy, but he ran into a wall of hostility and obstructionism from &#8220;Official Medicine&#8221;. Neither Neveu or Delbet (who was a member of the Academy of Medicine) was able to diffuse Neveu&#8217;s extraordinary results. The opposition was total: Professors of Medicine, Medical Peer-Reviews, the Academy itself, all were against the two doctors. &#8220;Official Medicine&#8221; saw in Magnesium Chloride Therapy a threat to its new and growing business: vaccinations. </small></big></p>

<p><big><small> Dr. Neveu wasn&#8217;t discouraged by this and continued to test this therapy in a wide range of diseases. He obtained very good results in: pharyngitis, tonsillitis, hoarseness, common cold, influenza, asthma, bronchitis, broncho-pneumonia, pulmonary emphysema, &#8220;children diseases&#8221; (whooping-cough, measles, rubella, mumps, scarlet fever&#8230;), alimentary and professional poisonings, gastroenteritis, boils, abscesses, erysipelas, whitlow, septic pricks (wounds), puerperal fever and osteomyelitis. But the indications for Magnesium Chloride therapy don&#8217;t end here. </small></big></p>

<p><big><small> In more recent years other physicians (and I among these) have verified many of Delbet&#8217;s and Neveu&#8217;s applications and have tried the therapy in other pathologies: asthmatic acute attack, shock, tetanus (for these the solution is administered by intravenous injection); herpes zoster, acute and chronic conjunctivitis, optic neuritis, rheumatic diseases, many allergic diseases, spring-asthenia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (even in cancer it can be an useful adjuvant). </small></big></p>

<p><big><small> The preceding lists of ailments are by no means exhaustive; maybe other illnesses can be treated with this therapy but, as this is a relatively &#8220;young&#8221; treatment, we are pioneers, and we need the help of all physicians of good will to definitely establish all the true possibilities of this wonderful therapy. </small></big></p>

<p><big><small> These doses must be administered BY MOUTH. The only contraindication to Magnesium Chloride Therapy is a severe renal insufficiency. As the magnesium chloride has a mild laxative effect, diarrhea sometimes appears on the first days of therapy, especially when high dosages (i.e. three doses a day) are taken; but this is not a reason to stop the therapy. </small></big></p>
<p><big><small> </small></big></p>
<p><big><small> The taste of the solution is not very good (it has a bitter-saltish flavor) so a little of fruit juice (grapefruit, orange, lemon) can be added to the solution, or it can be even used in the place of water to make the solution itself. </small></big></p>

<p><big><small> Grapefruit juice masks the bitter taste very well (especially if cold). </small></big></p>

<p><big><small> For <strong>CHRONIC</strong> diseases the standard treatment is one dose morning and evening for a long period (several months at least, but it can be continued for years). </small></big></p>

<p><big><small> In <strong>ACUTE</strong> diseases the dose is administered every 6 hours (every 3 hours the first two doses if the case is serious); then space every 8 hours and then 12 hours as improvement goes on. Summary : Aging is very often associated with magnesium (Mg) deficit. Total plasma magnesium concentrations are remarkably constant in healthy subjects throughout life, while total body Mg and Mg in the intracellular compartment tend to decrease with age. Dietary Mg deficiencies are common in the elderly population. Other frequent causes of Mg deficits in the elderly include reduced Mg intestinal absorption, reduced Mg bone stores, and excess urinary loss. Secondary Mg deficit in aging may result from different conditions and diseases often observed in the elderly (i.e. insulin resistance and/or type 2 diabetes mellitus) and drugs (i.e. use of hypermagnesuric diuretics). Chronic Mg deficits have been linked to an increased risk of numerous preclinical and clinical outcomes, mostly observed in the elderly population, including hypertension, stroke, atherosclerosis, ischemic heart disease, cardiac arrhythmias, glucose intolerance, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes mellitus, endothelial dysfunction, vascular remodeling, alterations in lipid metabolism, platelet aggregation/thrombosis, inflammation, oxidative stress, cardiovascular mortality, asthma, chronic fatigue, as well as depression and other neuropsychiatric disorders. Both aging and Mg deficiency have been associated to excessive production of oxygen-derived free radicals and low-grade inflammation. Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress are also present in several age-related diseases, such as many vascular and metabolic conditions, as well as frailty, muscle loss and sarcopenia, and altered immune responses, among others. Mg deficit associated to aging may be at least one of the pathophysiological links that may help to explain the interactions between inflammation and oxidative stress with the aging process and many age-related diseases.</p>

(It attaches to water in the colon and goes bye bye.) This is a relatively new method, so I&#8217;ve heard. Magnesium in general is a potent nervous system regulator. It&#8217;s nature&#8217;s calcium channel blocker, and it has relaxing effects. It soothes muscle and back pain, relieves arthritis, and may also help with insomnia and depression due to its serotonin-raising activity. It gives you more energy and endurance and makes you more impervious to stress. (You lose magnesium when experiencing stress, so people under much stress could especially use it to restore levels.) I read that most Americans are deficient in magnesium, but this deficiency is difficult to detect because blood tests are useless. It&#8217;s better to just experiment and see if you feel any better, since the stuff is quite safe.</p>
