LIVER DETOX RECIPE FROM RUSSIA

My sister had a very bad case of Hepatitis A when she was a little child. Her liver suffered a lot as a result of this dreadful illness, and ever since then she has been unable to eat various foods, due to difficulties with processing fats and sugars. She goes to see the liver specialist regularly. One day a doctor she was seeing gave her a recipe for liver detox which she has been using ever since, with great results.

The procedure involves Epsom salt (magnesium sulphate, or magnesium sulfate), some warm water, lemon, and a hot water bottle.

She mixes 1 level tablespoon of Epsom salt with a glass of warm water (about 250ml) and drinks it early in the morning when still in bed. Sometimes she uses mineral water. In Russia we have bottled mineral water which is very rich in magnesium sulphate salts, which I have been unable to find here. She has a hot water bottle ready, which she covers with a cloth to keep it warm but not hot, and places it on the liver area, while lying down on her right side. She stays in bed until she feels an urge to pass stool. Epsom salts relax the bile ducts, liver, intestines and promote peristalsis. A hot water bottle placed on the liver increases blood circulation in the liver/ gall bladder area.

The whole process is very powerful and cleansing for the whole body, not just the liver. But of course the liver is the main recipient of this luxurious treatment. A glass of warm water with half a lemon after that works really well, promoting detoxification. My sister goes on without food, on lemon water, for the whole day. She repeats the process once every two weeks. Sometimes she does it every week. The result of this detoxification procedure is raised energy, feeling of lightness, clear mind, better skin. It can also be a great starting point for weight loss. A magnesium chloride bath (or Epsom salt bath) can be used to replenish magnesium in the body and promote the process of detoxification.

OTHER MAGNESIUM-RICH SALTS & PRODUCTS

Magnesium chloride hexahydrate, which comes to us in the form of magnesium flake, oil and gel, is not the only salt which is known for its high level of magnesium. Even before we found out about its wonderful therapeutic effects on the body and mind, we had its great alternatives to turn to – magnesium sulphate (Epsom salt), and Dead Sea salt, as well as Dead Sea mud.

While Epsom salt has become known for its relaxing, pain and stress-reducing properties relatively recently, Dead Sea has been used by people and animals for thousands of years. It is possibly the most popular resort destination even now. People from all over the world come to Dead Sea to treat skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, musculo-skeletal, nervous disorders, with inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis among them. A high level of magnesium in Dead Sea water is being used to treat circulatory problems, heart disease, abnormal blood pressure, anxiety, depression, fertility issues, and countless other conditions.

Even though the magic of the sea and the sun combined have an unsurpassed effect on the body and mind, luckily, we do not need to go to sometimes unaffordable to many Dead Sea resorts to alleviate our problems. Dead Sea products are easily available to all, and we can use them any time we need in in a bath, body wrap, compress, foot bath, or – as is the case with the mud – in a local mud application to affected areas, face mask, and yes – body wrap.

To make a relaxing and therapeutic bath with Dead Sea salt, use 500g-1kg of salt (depending on how intense you want your experience to be) in a warm to very warm water. Add some lavender oil to enhance its relaxing effect – 5-10 drops per bath. if your skin is quite dry, add some sweet almond or olive oil to the bath – 2 table spoonfuls would be sufficient. Shake the water well. Not only will it nourish the skin, it will also help condition the hair. To achieve tong-term therapeutic effect, it is important to have such baths regularly, at least once a week, with 2-3 times a week being the best option.

For a foot bath, use 200g of Dead Sea salt, adding some rosemary and peppermint to it if your feet are aching after a busy day. The water temperature should be adjusted to your needs. I prefer it cool after a hot day, and warm on a cold evening, with peppermint replaced for a warming and circulation-stimulating eucalyptus oil.

For a body wrap – use a 10% salt solution. It is easier with the mud, since Dead Sea mud is a ready-to-use product, so just needs warming up and applied on the body and the face. However, even with mud there are a lot of suggestions and options to try.

One of my suggestions is – make a purifying and revitalising Dead Sea scrub. Use fine Dead Sea salt and mud, in equal proportion, either as is, or with some of your favourite essential oils. Add some extra-virgin olive oil, or sweet almond oil. Mix well and apply on the body in circular movements. Scrub the body well. Wash off. The same scrub can be used as a face exfoliator. Make sure that the body and face are free from any infections and eruptions before using any scrubs.

A mix of Dead Sea Mud and Salt, without the essential oil and vegetable oil, can be used in body wraps. The addition of the salt to the mud will intensify the effect of the healing effect of both. Extra salt will also act as a circulation-booster, and will promote sweating – a great start to weight loss programmes. The use of the mud is not recommended for pregnant women, and people with tumours, heart disease and abnormal blood pressure. This is due to the high saturation of the mud with biologically active substances which while being exceptionally beneficial for a healthy person, can over-stimulate a vulnerable one – an undesirable effect in the cases I have mentioned earlier. Limit yourself to the use of the salt then.

For chronically blocked sinuses, use a 1% solution of Dead Sea salt and water, 2-3 times a day, to flush the sinuses (use a large pipette).

For the sore throat and gums, the concentration can be increased – use 1 tbsp (20g) per 200g of warm water. This makes a 10% solution. Rinse the mouth and throat as many times as necessary.

The same procedures as with Dead Sea salt can be used with Epsom salt. Epsom salt is also a great product for detoxification procedures – internally and transdermally. This is due not only to its high level of magnesium, but of sulphur, which is part of the sulphate compound. Sulphur is an essential building block for our body – proteins simply cannot be created without sulphur, so the body uses a lot of it. Sulphur is also a vital component in detoxification processes, binding phenols and other harmful substances, and this property is being used in detoxification procedures with Epsom salt.

I can describe one very effective procedure for internal detox which is being used in Russia:

Liver flush. Helps open the bile ducts and relax eliminatory channels. This is how it is done: 2 teaspoonfuls of Epsom salt are mixed in a cup (250ml) of warm water. The solution is taken warm in the morning, then a hot water bottle on the liver area (to make it warm and not hot a towel can be used to wrap it). The person lies in bed until there is an urge to empty the bowel. Normally done once a week. Lemon herbal tea with honey (milk thistle, camomile and calendula are a good choice) and drunk throughout the day complements the cleansing effect of the procedure.

It has been researched that Epsom salt has shown to have a profound therapeutic effect on children with such neurological conditions as ADHD and autism. Such research has shown that these children’s bodies are low in sulphate – on average 15% lower than normal, and high levels of toxins – heavy metals, phenols, food colourings and artificial flavourings, etc. So the obvious solution would be to raise the levels of sulphur and magnesium in the body, and reduce the amount of toxins. Epsom salt has the ability to do both, by supplementing the body both with magnesium and sulphur, to promote the removal of toxins and top up magnesium levels, which have been proved to be very low in children with ADHD and autism.

For the same reasons, Epsom salt would be beneficial to adults who suspect that they are suffering from a toxic overload and low levels of magnesium.

The best way to use Epsom salt is by having a bath with it. Use 500g of it per bath, 2-3 times a week, for a profound therapeutic effect.

LIVER DETOX & MAGNESIUM

Liver – its role in detoxification

The liver is the main detoxification organ in the body, alongside the skin and kidneys, neutralising toxins produced internally as a result of metabolic processes, as well as external toxins – harmful organisms, products of pollution, heavy metals, toxins we get from food, drink, cigarettes, alcohol, fertilisers, etc.

The liver performs hundreds of tasks every minute, constantly synthesising, removing harmful substances, filtering, processing. The liver is involved in all systems of the body, including blood circulation, endocrine, digestive, nervous, immune, reproductive, eliminatory systems. It produces multiple enzymes and hormones which are required for various body processes.

The liver detoxifies the body in a complex series of chemical reactions. Many of the toxins circulating in the body as a result of metabolic activity are fat-soluble. One of the functions of the liver is to convert these fat-soluble substances into water-soluble ones, so that they can be excreted from the body with bile or urine.

If the liver is not functioning properly, then it is unable to remove fat-soluble toxins efficiently, so they get deposited in the fatty tissues in the body and can stay there for years. So the excess fat we carry may contain a lot of fat-soluble toxic waste which keeps accumulating, leading to poor immunity, chronic fatigue, slow metabolism, weight gain, depression, formation of tumours.

The liver is involved in the regulation of hormones in the body, constantly synthesising and breaking them down. If the liver is inefficient due to being overloaded with toxins, then this synthesis and elimination of unwanted hormones is compromised. This means that the hormones which the body no longer needs are not broken down and are accumulating in the body, mainly in the fatty tissues. A good example is excess oestrogen in women which gets deposited in fatty tissues causing all sorts of problems, such as heavy bleeding, weight gain, fibroids, development of tumours, etc.

Apart from what has been mentioned already, the liver is the powerhouse in the body, producing the energy in a long chain of enzymatic reactions, as a result of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism. Again, if its function is deficient, then the amount of energy it produces is insufficient for the body processes, resulting in slowing down of the whole body.

On the whole, the liver determines how healthy a person feels. This is why naturopaths first of all examine the liver to check its efficiency and overall health.

What role does magnesium play in all this?

Magnesium is one of the most important and abundant minerals in the body. It is the main component in over 300 reactions. The liver uses a lot of magnesium, since it is the nutrient processing, detoxifying and energy producing “factory” in the body. Without magnesium these processes would not take place.

Magnesium can become depleted as a result of an illness, alcohol abuse, insufficient magnesium in the diet, stress, physical exertion.
Here is a result of a study of how liver magnesium is affected by alcohol abuse for example:

“The acute ingestion of alcohol causes a prompt, short-term increase in urinary excretion of magnesium. There are wide individual variations in the extent of this effect both in normal subjects and in chronic alcoholics. Patients who are already magnesium-depleted tend to lose less magnesium in response to alcohol intake. http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0887/is_n10_v13/ai_15882994

Magnesium plays a very important role in detoxification, in a number of ways:

1. It provides energy needed for detox by activating the energy-producing ATP-molecule. Without magnesium energy cannot be produced, so detoxification is not possible.

2. It stimulates the sodium-potassium exchange on the cell wall which regulates potassium level inside and outside the cell thus stimulating the cell cleansing.

3. Magnesium regulates calcium content inside the cell preventing cellular calcification and premature ageing.

4. Magnesium protects the cell against oxidation and damage by free radicals.

5. Magnesium protects the body from heavy metals such as cadmium, lead, nickel, aluminium, mercury.

6. Magnesium is crucial at protecting the brain against damage by heavy metals.

To keep the body free from toxins, it is absolutely vital to maintain optimal magnesium levels. There are several way in which it can be achieved:

1. Magnesium-rich diet
2. Oral supplementation with magnesium
3. Transdermal magnesium therapy.

All of these methods can and should be used in cases where magnesium levels have become low.

Transdermal magnesium therapy is one of the best ways to replenish magnesium levels quickly and efficiently. This can be achieved by spraying or rubbing magnesium oil on the body regularly after a bath, or using magnesium baths/ foot baths, compresses.

LIVER DETOX PROCEDURE

The following method provides a quick and effective liver cleanse.
One teaspoon of magnesium chloride, mixed with about 500ml of warm water, to be taken early in the morning. Have a hot water bottle ready. Then lie down, with the hot water bottle tucked under the right side (it should not be too hot – 45 degrees C would be just the right temperature). This will stimulate the bowel activity and bile excretion, kick-starting the process of detoxification.

It is important to drink plenty of water on the day. Green montmorillonite clay can be added to the water. Clay is another very powerful substance able to bind toxins and take them out of the body both mechanically and via a process called “cation exchange”. FAR INFRARED MAGNESIUM WRAPS

What is a Far Infrared Magnesium Wrap?

The Far Infrared Magnesium Wrap, developed by Galina St George, is a luxurious treatment which combines far-infrared heat and the power of magnesium to promote detoxification, weight loss, immunity, relaxation of tissues, nerves, blood vessels, sleep, relaxation of the mind, increase in the energy levels, blood circulation, metabolism, reduction in aches & pains, water retention, cramps, fatigue, quick increase in magnesium levels in the body which benefits the heart, blood vessels, nerves and all the other body tissues. In a nutshell, this is one of the quickest way to sweat out toxins, lose extra pounds, and replenish magnesium levels in the body. Even one treatment can produce dramatic results.

The treatment is performed using an infrared thermal bag/sauna and magnesium oil, gel or scrub. Magnesium oil has a stronger action than magnesium gel. Magnesium scrub has sea salt in it, and is a more potent product if the main goal is to lose weight, boost circulation, metabolism and immunity.

The infrared heat penetrates deep into the body tissues promoting relaxation. Unlike ordinary heat, with far infrared heat much deeper layers of the skin are affected. The heat also increases the product interaction with the body and its effect many times. Body tissues relax and pores open up to take in the vital minerals from the products while sweating out the toxins, and aches and pains with them.

The treatment consists of a body scrub/massage, followed by a 30-60 minute session in an infrared thermal sauna bag. Duration of the treatment is determined by the goal and the recipient’s state of health. These factors also determine the temperature settings. Full information about the procedure is provided at our workshops.

After the treatment

Expect to sweat out a lot of water (with toxins!) and feel thirsty afterwards (drinking plenty of slightly salted water is essential after the treatment to prevent dehydration). Also expect to feel and look lighter, healthier, relaxed, rejuvenated.

This is what Joy is writing about it: “I woke up this morning refreshed and rejuvenated. I looked in the mirror and I swear I look 10 years younger. My skin now feels like silk and can’t feel an ache in my body. I can’t wait to come back for more. The combination of Galina’s amazing salt tissue body wraps combined with her exquisite massage – you’ll definitely leave the table already looking forward to next time.”Joy Anderson, Joy Yoga Studio.

MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE COMPRESS

One of the best ways to use magnesium chloride transdermally is in a compress - either hot or cold, depending on a condition, whether it is chronic or acute.

To make a solution for a compress, use 1 part of magnesium oil to 2-3 parts of water. You will also need a soft cloth, cling film and a warm cloth (e.g. a scarf). If you are using magnesium flakes, add 1 part of flakes to 6-7 parts of water.

For inflammations and recent injuries, where tissues are painful, hot and swollen, use a cool compress. To keep it cool, use an ice pack to apply on top of the soaked cloth. Make sure it is kept cool but not too cold, since the blood needs to circulate to promote the healing.

For chronic nagging aches, muscle tension, back pain use warm to hot magnesium compresses. Do not use heat where it is already present in the body. Use cool compresses for conditions accompanied by heat, redness, pain and swelling and warm to hot ones for tight tense congested muscles, cold limbs and other areas where circulation is slow and tissues rigid and painful.

A warm magnesium oil compress applied on the area of the liver will promote liver detoxification, and on the stomach area to improve elimination, especially in cases of constipation.

A warm magnesium chloride compress applied on the forehead and the back of the neck and head will help relieve a tension headache and a migraine. The same compress will relieve aching muscles after a strenuous exercise.
