DIABETES – HOW CAN MAGNESIUM HELP?

OTHER MAGNESIUM-RICH SALTS & PRODUCTS
Magnesium chloride hexahydrate, which comes to us in the form of magnesium flake, oil and gel, is not the only salt which is known for its high level of magnesium. Even before we found out about its wonderful therapeutic effects on the body and mind, we had its great alternatives to turn to – magnesium sulphate (Epsom salt), and Dead Sea salt, as well as Dead Sea mud.
While Epsom salt has become known for its relaxing, pain and stress-reducing properties relatively recently, Dead Sea has been used by people and animals for thousands of years. It is possibly the most popular resort destination even now. People from all over the world come to Dead Sea to treat skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, musculo-skeletal, nervous disorders, with inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis among them. A high level of magnesium in Dead Sea water is being used to treat circulatory problems, heart disease, abnormal blood pressure, anxiety, depression, fertility issues, and countless other conditions.

To make a relaxing and therapeutic bath with Dead Sea salt, use 500g-1kg of salt (depending on how intense you want your experience to be) in a warm to very warm water. Add some lavender oil to enhance its relaxing effect – 5-10 drops per bath. if your skin is quite dry, add some sweet almond or olive oil to the bath – 2 table spoonfuls would be sufficient. Shake the water well. Not only will it nourish the skin, it will also help condition the hair. To achieve tong-term therapeutic effect, it is important to have such baths regularly, at least once a week, with 2-3 times a week being the best option.
For a foot bath, use 200g of Dead Sea salt, adding some rosemary and peppermint to it if your feet are aching after a busy day. The water temperature should be adjusted to your needs. I prefer it cool after a hot day, and warm on a cold evening, with peppermint replaced for a warming and circulation-stimulating eucalyptus oil.
For a body wrap – use a 10% salt solution. It is easier with the mud, since Dead Sea mud is a ready-to-use product, so just needs warming up and applied on the body and the face. However, even with mud there are a lot of suggestions and options to try.
One of my suggestions is – make a purifying and revitalising Dead Sea scrub. Use fine Dead Sea salt and mud, in equal proportion, either as is, or with some of your favourite essential oils. Add some extra-virgin olive oil, or sweet almond oil. Mix well and apply on the body in circular movements. Scrub the body well. Wash off. The same scrub can be used as a face exfoliator. Make sure that the body and face are free from any infections and eruptions before using any scrubs.
A mix of Dead Sea Mud and Salt, without the essential oil and vegetable oil, can be used in body wraps. The addition of the salt to the mud will intensify the effect of the healing effect of both. Extra salt will also act as a circulation-booster, and will promote sweating – a great start to weight loss programmes. The use of the mud is not recommended for pregnant women, and people with tumours, heart disease and abnormal blood pressure. This is due to the high saturation of the mud with biologically active substances which while being exceptionally beneficial for a healthy person, can over-stimulate a vulnerable one – an undesirable effect in the cases I have mentioned earlier. Limit yourself to the use of the salt then.
For chronically blocked sinuses, use a 1% solution of Dead Sea salt and water, 2-3 times a day, to flush the sinuses (use a large pipette).
For the sore throat and gums, the concentration can be increased – use 1 tbsp (20g) per 200g of warm water. This makes a 10% solution. Rinse the mouth and throat as many times as necessary.
The same procedures as with Dead Sea salt can be used with Epsom salt. Epsom salt is also a great product for detoxification procedures – internally and transdermally. This is due not only to its high level of magnesium, but of sulphur, which is part of the sulphate compound. Sulphur is an essential building block for our body – proteins simply cannot be created without sulphur, so the body uses a lot of it. Sulphur is also a vital component in detoxification processes, binding phenols and other harmful substances, and this property is being used in detoxification procedures with Epsom salt.
I can describe one very effective procedure for internal detox which is being used in Russia:
Liver flush. Helps open the bile ducts and relax eliminatory channels. This is how it is done: 2 teaspoonfuls of Epsom salt are mixed in a cup (250ml) of warm water. The solution is taken warm in the morning, then a hot water bottle on the liver area (to make it warm and not hot a towel can be used to wrap it). The person lies in bed until there is an urge to empty the bowel. Normally done once a week. Lemon herbal tea with honey (milk thistle, camomile and calendula are a good choice) and drunk throughout the day complements the cleansing effect of the procedure.
It has been researched that Epsom salt has shown to have a profound therapeutic effect on children with such neurological conditions as ADHD and autism. Such research has shown that these children’s bodies are low in sulphate – on average 15% lower than normal, and high levels of toxins – heavy metals, phenols, food colourings and artificial flavourings, etc. So the obvious solution would be to raise the levels of sulphur and magnesium in the body, and reduce the amount of toxins. Epsom salt has the ability to do both, by supplementing the body both with magnesium and sulphur, to promote the removal of toxins and top up magnesium levels, which have been proved to be very low in children with ADHD and autism.
For the same reasons, Epsom salt would be beneficial to adults who suspect that they are suffering from a toxic overload and low levels of magnesium.

MAGNESIUM – THE ‘ENERGY’ MINERAL – STUDY
Magnesium is the ultimate ‘energy’ mineral. Without magnesium energy simply cannot be produced. This is due to the fact that magnesium is required in the production energy-rich bonds and release of energy within the cell, from ATP – the “energy” molecule of each cell. If ATP is not bound by magnesium, then the cell dies.
Researchers with the USDA Agricultural Research Service recruited 10 postmenopausal women to participate in a three-phase diet and exercise study. During phase one (35 days), the women followed a controlled diet that delivered an adequate amount of magnesium. (The current Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for women is 320 mg daily. For men; 420 mg daily.)
In the second phase (93 days), each subject consumed a diet that contained less than half the RDA for magnesium. In the final phase (49 days) the subjects returned to a diet with adequate magnesium. At the end of each phase, subjects took exercise tests, as well as physiological and biochemical tests.
Results showed that when magnesium intake was low, exercise increased heart rate and required more oxygen compared to exercising when magnesium intake was adequate. Also, when magnesium levels in muscles were low, more energy was required and subjects tired more easily compared to subjects with adequate magnesium levels.

MAGNESIUM BATHS WITH A DIFFERENCE
I would like to share with you a very powerful experience which I have have had thanks to magnesium chloride baths taken over a period of time.
Before I start describing it, I should say that I take magnesium chloride baths regularly, normally using warm but not hot water, and about 300-400g of magnesium chloride flake. It helps me to relax and unwind before bedtime, and is great for replenishing magnesium levels and reducing muscle tension.
However, this time my body had been aching for some time, especially in the shoulder area and the joints, perhaps due to the physical exhaustion and mental strain I had been under for the past couple of weeks, having to complete a project which took quite a bit of my time, as well as mental and physical energy. I was was going to book myself for a massage, but decided that I would need to relax prior to it, both mentally and physically, in order to get the best results.
I became so desperately achy that I needed to use drastic measures. So I used about 1kg of magnesium chloride flake, mixing it in a bathful of very warm, almost hot water. I started with warm water, immersed myself into the bath, adding hot water gradually. I made sure that the bathroom door was left open to get cool fresh air in.
The temperature of the water was of course tolerable and not uncomfortable, but I really made sure that it was as hot as I could possibly tolerate without experiencing discomfort. As soon as the temperature went down I added more hot water.

MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE VS MAGNESIUM SULPHATE
I have been asked many times about the differences between magnesium chloride and magnesium sulphate, commonly known as Epsom Salts. There is a great article about it written by Dr Mark Sircus, a well-know and recognised researcher of magnesium and its benefits. I quote it here:
“According to Daniel Reid, author of The Tao of Detox, magnesium sulfate, commonly known as Epsom salts, is rapidly excreted through the kidneys and therefore difficult to assimilate. This would explain in part why the effects from Epsom salt baths do not last long and why you need more magnesium sulfate in a bath than magnesium chloride to get similar results. Magnesium chloride is easily assimilated and metabolized in the human body.[1] However, Epsom salts are used specifically by parents of children with autism because of the sulfate, which they are usually deficient in , sulfate is also crucial to the body and is wasted in the urine of autistic children.
For purposes of cellular detoxification and tissue purification, the most effective form of magnesium is magnesium chloride, which has a strong excretory effect on toxins and stagnant energies stuck in the tissues of the body, drawing them out through the pores of the skin. They write, “The reason of the toxicity of magnesium pharmacological doses of magnesium using the sulfate anion rather than the chloride anion may perhaps arise from the respective chemical structures of both the two magnesium salts. Chemically, both MgSO4 and MgCl2 are hexa-aqueous complexes. However MgCl2 crystals consist of dianions with magnesium coordinated to the six water molecules as a complex, [Mg(H2O)6]2+ and two independent chloride anions, Cl-. In MgSO4, a seventh water molecule is associated with the sulphate anion, [Mg(H2O)6]2 +[SO4. H2O]. Consequently, the more hydrated MgSO4 molecule may have chemical interactions with paracellular components, rather than with cellular components, presumably potentiating toxic manifestations while reducing therapeutic effect.”
MgSO4 is not always the appropriate salt in clinical therapeutics.
MgCl2 seems the better anion-cation association to be
used in many clinical and pharmacological indications.[2]

Magnesium sulfate is a chemical compound containing magnesium and sulfate, with the formula MgSO4. In its hydrated form the pH is 6.0 (5.5 to 7.0). It is often encountered as the heptahydrate, MgSO4·7H2O, commonly called Epsom salts. Anhydrous magnesium sulfate is used as a drying agent. Since the anhydrous form is hygroscopic (readily absorbs water from the air) and therefore harder to weigh accurately, the hydrate is often preferred when preparing solutions, for example in medical preparations. Epsom salts have traditionally been used as a component of bath salts.

Stress, fertility & magnesium
Taking it easy may be the offhand advice doctors give to women who cannot conceive, but new scientific evidence confirms that stress does indeed play a role in conception.
Researchers at Oxford University and the US National Institutes of Health measured stress in women trying to get pregnant and found that those who were most stressed were least likely to conceive.
Stress joins other well known pregnancy risk factors such as excessive alcohol consumption, smoking and obesity.
The study measured two stress hormones in healthy women between the ages of 18 and 40 who were trying to conceive. It found that women with high levels of adrenalin had a 12 per cent lower chance of conceiving when fertile as compared to those who were less stressed.
“Irrespective of the day or frequency of sexual intercourse during the fertile window, women with higher concentrations of alpha-amylase were less likely to conceive than women with lower concentrations,” the study said, referring to the enzyme that is an indicator of adrenalin levels.
However, women who were found to have a higher level of cortisol, which is a measure of chronic stress, were no less likely to conceive than women with lower levels of the stress hormone.
Dr Cecilia Pyper, of the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit at the University of Oxford, said: “The findings support the idea that couples should aim to stay as relaxed as they can about trying for a baby.
“In some people’s cases, it might be relevant to look at relaxation techniques, counselling and even approaches like yoga and meditation.”
The findings are published in the journal Fertility and Sterility.

Lack of sleep a ‘ticking time bomb’ for health
Not enough sleep increases the risk of heart disease, stroke and other serious health problems, say UK researchers.
Burning the candle at both ends increases your risk of suffering from a stroke or heart disease and dying prematurely, new research suggests.
“If you sleep less than six hours per night and have disturbed sleep you stand a 48 per cent greater chance of developing or dying from heart disease and a 15 per cent greater chance of developing or dying of a stroke,” said Professor Francesco Cappuccio from the University of Warwick Medical School.
He also warned: “The trend for late nights and early mornings is actually a ticking time bomb for our health so you need to act now to reduce your risk of developing these life-threatening conditions.”
The professor and co-author Dr Michelle Miller followed up evidence carried out over seven to 25 years from more than 470,000 people from eight countries including Japan, USA, Sweden and the UK.
Dr Miller said that chronic lack of sleep leads to the production of hormones and chemicals in the body which increase the risk of developing serious health problems such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, obesity and diabetes, as well as heart disease and stroke.
Professor Cappuccio also added: “There is an expectation in today’s society to fit more into our lives. The whole work/life balance struggle is causing too many of us to trade in precious sleeping time to ensure we complete all the jobs we believe are expected of us.
“But in doing so, we are significantly increasing the risk of suffering a stroke or developing cardiovascular disease resulting in, for example, heart attacks.”
However, he also warned of the dangers of going too far the other way, as sleeping for too long – more than nine hours at a stretch – can be an indicator of illness, including cardiovascular disease.
He advised: “By ensuring you have about seven hours sleep a night, you are protecting your future health, and reducing the risk of developing chronic illnesses. The link is clear from our research: get the sleep you need to stay healthy and live longer.”
